Black History Month Training Collection

This Black History Month, we should all actively reject myths and long-stale attitudes that prevent us from seeing the worth and value in everyone – not despite differences and uniqueness, but because of them. Old myths and untruths we inherit about others’ lived experiences, cultural differences, skills and abilities prevent us from being able to appreciate the richness and abundance that comes from embracing and understanding diverse identities and experiences. Thankfully, we can take part in activities that can help us abandon these myths and usher in a new way of thinking without even having to leave the house.

New CMS Hospital Price Transparency Requirements: What Do They Mean?

What are the requirements?
  • Starting January 1, 2021, all hospitals operating in the U.S. must provide clear, accessible pricing information online about the items and services they provide.
  • This information is meant to make it easier to shop for care, compare prices across hospitals and estimate cost before entering the hospital.
  • Hospitals’ standard charges, including the rates they negotiate with insurance companies and the discounted price a hospital is willing to accept directly from a patient if paid in cash, must be publicly available, free of charge, and presented in a consumer-friendly display.
  • Hospitals must post standard charges for at least 300 services that can be planned in advance, along with a description and any other services the hospital customarily provides with it. This includes things such as x-rays, outpatient visits, imaging and laboratory tests or bundled services such as a colonoscopy. You’ll be able to find the hospital’s standard charge for the shoppable service and see other associated costs.
What do the requirements lack?
  • There is no central repository – each hospital’s website needs to be visited in order to obtain price information.
  • Cost-sharing information is not yet available (likely 2023).
  • There are limited specifications for how information needs to be displayed on a hospital website, resulting in different displays.
