National Merit Semifinalists
Colm Connolly '19 and Sofia Odeste '19 are among approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
 
Connolly and Odeste, along with the other academically talented high school seniors, have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $31 million, that will be offered next spring.
   
Senior & Parent/Guardian Liturgy
Tuesday, October 2, at 1:10 p.m.
Parents and guardians of seniors, you are invited to the Senior & Parent/Guardian Mass on Tuesday, October 2, beginning at 1:10 p.m., in the large gymnasium. Seniors are encouraged to dress up for this special occasion.
 
Parents of all faiths are invited to join their sons and daughters for this special celebration of the beginning of their final year of high school.
 
Seniors Learn About Substance Use and Abuse prevention
 
As part of the substance use and abuse curriculum that students receive at O'Dowd, the senior class attended a presentation on the health risks associated with alcohol, nicotine and marijuana use.  The senior class meeting took place during MP on Thursday, September 13. O'Dowd partnered with Being Adept, a Bay Area non-profit drug and alcohol abuse prevention program. Being Adept also presented to the parent community on September 5.

Rugby Teams engage in Community Service
 
For the third year in a row, the O'Dowd men's and women's varsity rugby teams engaged in a community service project, helping the Kairos Prison Outreach Program set up and organize their fall retreat for women and children who have male family members currently incarcerated.

Tackle Procrastination: Tips for Students about How to Organize Time and Follow Through
Ready to get great grades in high school without losing your life to school and studying? Back by popular demand, Gretchen Wegner returns to share small-but-powerful time management & organization routines that every student & parent should know, so that you "de-stressify" school and maximize success (not to mention, have a life too!).
 
This interactive, anti-boring presentation, set for Tuesday, September 25, from 7-8 p.m. in the Annex, will include straightforward tips for parents as well as students, so come one, come all!

Help! My Teen is Dating
 
Help! My Teen is Dating provides real solutions to tough conversations and is changing the way parents and their teenagers are approaching, discussing, and handling decision-making regarding dating, intimacy, and parties.
 
This event by the  Date Safe Project is scheduled for Wednesday, October  3, in the theater. Join us for a welcoming reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7 p.m.  Click this link to RSVP.   
 
This evening event is a complement to the Safer Choices student assembly that will be presented during the day on October 3rd as part of Health and Wellness Week.
 
Curious About College FInancial Aid?
Join the Counseling Department and a financial aid professional on Thursday, October 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Theater, for an informative evening focused on the successful completion of college financial aid forms. This session is geared towards seniors and their families, but all are welcome.
 
In addition, we are excited to announce that this year we will be hosting a Spanish speaking presentation on the same date and at the same time in the Dominican Lounge.

Kwame' Glover '19 Reflection on Rise March
 
Kwame' Glover '19 was among a group of O'Dowd students, faculty and staff who joined with more than 30,000 people in the historical RISE March for Climate, Jobs and Justice that took place on September 8 in San Francisco. He recently shared his reflection on the experience.

Sara Lindorfer '19 was moved to action by the RISE March for Climate, Jobs and Justice, later attending a One Planet Charter writing event to develop principles around the subject of environmental justice.

Seniors Colm Connolly, Katie Rehberger and Remington Wood were recently recognized as 2017-18 USA Water Polo Academic All-Americans.
 
 
  
O'Dowd offers new recruiting tool for student-athletes
O'Dowd has introduced a new tool to ensure that student-athletes are empowered to pursue their athletic dreams. Launched by the Athletic Department on September 1, SportsRecruits is a platform that supports student-athletes in their efforts to discern schools that meet their academic and athletic needs. O'Dowd is one of the few high schools in Northern California to offer the program.

Save the Date for 2019 Alumni Grand Reunion
 
Be sure to mark your calendar for the 2nd annual Grand Reunion, set for Saturday, May 18, 2019, from 4-8 p.m.  
 
All O'Dowd alumni welcome, but we will be celebrating the classes of 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

8th Grade HSPT Prep Workshop  set for December 1, 2018 
Bishop O'Dowd High School partners with Classroom Matters tutoring center of Berkeley to offer an HSPT prep course on the O'Dowd campus. This course is open to any prospective high school  students looking to familiarize themselves with the format and focus of the HSPT.
  • When & Where: Bishop O'Dowd High School, Saturday, December 1, 2018.
  • Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Pizza lunch and all materials are included - students need only bring a water bottle, #2 pencils and a few ballpoint pens.

Tomorrow Night: Pizza on the Patio
The Dragon Parents invite you to join parents from all grade levels at our annual Pizza Kick-Off Party tomorrow evening. We'll fire up the pizza ovens and provide other refreshments. This is all about celebrating our school community and our students' progress.  
 
If you're interested, you may also attend a presentation by Director of Academic Support Catherine Harris about the types of academic support O'Dowd provides. The party starts at 6 p.m. and Ms. Harris' presentation begins at 7 p.m. in CES #2. 
 
Upcoming Class Socials
Another opportunity to socialize with the parent community are the upcoming grade-level get-togethers planned by the Dragon Parents. These are held off-campus in various venues, with appetizers and a no-host bar. No RSVP necessary. Come as you are!
