BioPharmGuy

Someone recently asked about our service provider banner ad, which we got rid of almost two years ago. Turns out this interested party had found an old version of our webpage that described it. Immediately, I gave our website manager a piece of my mind and I’m happy to say I took it pretty well.

We get a lot of spam trying to sell us lists of various doctors and people like that. But this week they were pushing a new angle - a list of entomologists. What an unmarketable list - entomologists are never flush.

Industry

Psychedelic2

As if psychedelics weren’t being pushed hard enough by the fanboys, now we've got some characters merging virtual reality with psychedelic treatment

We just need some AI/Machine Learning to teach our stupid brains what they should be thinking, and we’ll really be set. Reality is for suckers!

Such soothing music in their youtube video too, though they had us at ‘VR-modulated, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy’.

Rila Therapeutics

Rila debuted late last week and the PR piece didn’t mention anything about having a website. No Linkedin page either.

So we did what we do here at BPG - we guessed the url. That's a secret of the pros for ya.

Cresigel

This company has done some work in animals and they're moving on to try to get their product approved in humans. While that seems like a logical route, it's tougher than you may think.

In this case, the product in question is an algae-derived hemostatic.

Cresigel just received their fourth Series A (cough*Series D*cough) to help move things along.

We always root for cool concepts, so let’s wish them luck.

Temporary Name

Back in 2020, Pisgah Labs decided to go in a new direction and changed their company name to Onyx Scientific.

Then exactly one month later they reverted back to Pisgah Labs.

Guess they simply couldn't accept the loss of such a beautiful name...Pisgah Labs. Ahhhhh.

Donations

Eli Lilly, the big dog of pharmaceuticals here in Indiana, donated $92.5M to Purdue University to establish a pharmaceutical manufacturing program for undergrads which will lead directly to internships and positions at Lilly.

This is a pretty big commitment – Purdue has a decent pharmacology program, but actual pharma manufacturing is not something for which they have historically been known.

BioPharmGuy came to town in 2009, now this? Is West Lafayette destined to be the next biotech hub? (No)

But while we’re on the topic of munificence, last weekend BioPharmGuy sponsored the finest straw bales money could buy:

BPG Straw Bales

Just look at that airy, nutrient-free straw. Amazing quality.

Sure, Lilly’s donation was 300,000x more than ours, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

Right???

Team Roast – Anagenesis

If you would like to honor all 31 team members on your website, but don’t want to bore us to death with bios for each, creating a fun shape from their tiny photos might be on option.

But what shape?

Perhaps a pyramid showing the workplace hierarchy? Maybe a heart showing how much everyone loves their work?

Or if you’re Anagenesis Biotechnologies, maybe a pretzel. Which would show…the team's hunger for success?

That pretzel would look a lot more tasty with Stanley Hudson in the middle.

Biotech Company Names

What’s the optimal length for a biotech company name?

We don’t know, but we do know the average company name in our directory has 14.6 characters. The most common length is 8 characters while 14 characters is the median length.

Check out this distribution of company name lengths:

Name Length Chart

A little weird, yes? 7 & 8 characters has a large spike, then it plummets until starting to pick up, peaking again at 18-20 characters.

So what gives?

Mostly it seems to be due to the companies who opt for a two-word name, the second of which is either ‘pharmaceuticals’ or ‘therapeutics’. A space plus either of these words brings the character count to 16 or 13 even before taking into account the first word of the company name.

So there is a zone from 0-13 characters where these pharmaceuticals/therapeutics companies can't exist. And it takes a few more characters for the names to start getting reasonable, meaning the dead zone for them is probably more like 0-16 characters. So any company that names themselves in this way will sort of push their character count to the right on the chart.

One more thing - you may notice this chart extends strangely far to the right. That’s because there’s a company whose name has 49 characters in it. Congrats to the psychopaths at SFL Regulatory Affairs & Scientific Communication for having the longest name in our directory. Really rolls off the tongue.

Health & Science

Triple Booster Score

The media is definitely losing it on the Covid stuff. New variant BA.Q is rolling out and CNN is referring to it as a "Scrabble variant".

Yeah, that makes sense, Scrabble is the only time anyone ever uses the letter Q.

Calling it an "alphabet variants" would have made about the same amount of sense.

Bivalent Booster Bust

Researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Columbia University, and the University of Michigan concluded the new, bivalent booster was not better than the original vaccine against Omicron at generating neutralizing antibodies.

Their study involved taking blood samples from a small number of vaccinated people and running assays to see how well they had produced antibodies to Omicron subvariants.

In the end, the bivalent booster led to a 30% stronger antibody response, yet this was considered insignificant.

Bivalent Booster Bonanza

But then there's this study from Moderna where a clinical trial testing for safety and immunogenicity (ie whether an immune response occurred) was conducted and this time those who received the bivalent booster saw stronger antibody responses.

Whatever the real answer, clinical studies have shown no additional side effects when comparing the bivalent vaccine to the original.

ETC.

Refreshing Investment

In these days of inflation and crashing crypto/shitcoins what can we rely on anymore? How about the one product whose price somehow never changes decade after decade? They even print it right there on the front of the product. You know what we mean - Arizona Iced Tea.

No matter the economic weather, it's magically still $0.99 a can. Not even the most seasoned economists can explain this phenomenon.

But someone has finally used it to solve all our problems with an Arizona Iced Tea-backed stablecoin.

Now one can safely gamble their life savings knowing that in the best case, it will be worth the same as it was yesterday.

The future is now.
