Happy Birthday to 0.27% of you.

Happy Birthmonth to 8.5% of you.

Happy Birthyear to none of you, unless someone is reading a biotech newsletter to a newborn, in which case, happy birthyear, kid. Enjoy it, because judging by your parent's choice at this moment, it's probably all downhill from here.

Emails

I get spam about all the buzzy stuff, which changes with the times and now it's pretty much all about AI, ChatGPT, funding, marketing & outsourcing. But I did get a Kentucky Derby-related spam yesterday which was a breath of fresh air.

Not many good names in the Derby field this year, but someone named their thoroughbred "Verifying".

Buffering would have been much cooler.

Industry

Toughest Pill to Swallow

Last week the FDA approved the first orally-administered product derived from fecal microbiota. It's indicated in recurrent C. Difficile.

C. Diff is a wicked infection that is going to become more and more of a problem for modern health systems worldwide, but at least for some sufferers, they will now be able to eat s**t and live, which is better than the alternative.

Totally Bogus

We are not medical doctors, but we read a lot about various indications drug companies are targeting. It's not often we see an unfamiliar one, but here we have a company working on a treatment for babesiosis which sounds like something a partying 1980s movie character might be afflicted with.

The reality is it's a parasitic infection of red blood cells, which is decidedly less bodacious.

Team Roast - Double Double CEO

Has there ever been a better power-sharing arrangement than co-CEOs? No, of course not! Never a problem making decisions, everything works smoothly.

In the cases where a company has opted for this ideal leadership arrangement, shouldn't the co-CEOs have to be clear about only doing half the job?

Yet here we have a company where the dude's title is "CEO" while the woman's title is "co-CEO". Bad look.

But then when it's two guys, they're both just CEO. Or they're both co-CEOs. Another two here. And two female co-CEOs.

Guess the moral is, find out what the other CEO is calling themselves and do that.

But why the hell are there so many co-CEOs?

Perfect Merger

A new company that launched last month is called CTRL Therapeutics and all we've been thinking about ever since is, what if they eventually merge with Altimmune & Delee? If it happens, it would be the greatest restart in biotech history.

Team Roast - Felix

Naming your company Felix is pretty weird, especially when your founder isn't named Felix. But running your team's headshots through a Windows 95 image filter is even weirder (scroll down for pics). Yuck.

Health & Science

RSV Vaccine

The FDA approved an RSV vaccine for the first time. It was approved for those aged 60+ and may be available this fall. RSV is a common disease in children, but also quietly kills something like 14,000 seniors each year.

Will seniors trust a new vaccine after these several years of anti-vaccine propaganda? Most probably will. The rest can live with their choices. Or not.

Slimming Down & Fattening Up

The weight loss industry is undergoing tremendous ructions in the wake of the recent approvals of Wegovy and other weight-loss medications. The latest collateral damage is Jenny Craig, which is reportedly shutting down after 40 years.

The remaining titan of weight loss, WeightWatchers, got into the Wegovy game itself earlier this year by purchasing an online telehealth company that focuses on obesity.

Demand for Wegovy has been so strong, Novo Nordisk is limiting sales of starter doses. As they are currently unable to keep up with demand, Novo runs the risk of leaving existing patients without the product for extended periods.

The supply problem is being exacerbated by people, including many celebrities, using it off label when it is currently only approved for obese patients or those who are overweight with additional health issues.

Ton o’ ‘tonin

The supplement industry in America is a wild west style free for all. The latest evidence for this comes from a study of commercially available gummy melatonin supplements. The authors of the study purchased 25 of them and tested for melatonin & CBD content.

One labeled as melatonin contained no melatonin at all, but plenty of CBD. The melatonin-containing ones held anywhere from 74 to 347% of the labeled dose. Only three of them contained a dose within 10% of what the label stated.

Just another example of how you never can tell what you’re going to get when you purchase a supplement, except poorer. Caveat emptor.

Button on the Finger

A woman posted the results of her finger tendon-fixing surgery on Reddit. She shared the lovely picture demonstrating how the tendon was attached to a button through her fingernail to keep it in place.

Some commenters asked how much they billed for the button. Answer: $24.97
