The vast majority of Borealis’s 25-person founding team previously worked for Chinook Therapeutics Inc., which was hatched in Vancouver by Versant and bought last year by Novartis for US$3.5-billion. Novartis celebrates the Canada-wide Implementation of newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). With these programs in place, a blood test routinely done shortly after birth will be able to detect SMA before symptoms appear. University of British Columbia receives over $8.8 million to drive innovation in life sciences and food processing. UBC is receiving $5 million to establish the Biodevice Foundry to provide growing companies with lab space, specialized equipment and training programs to develop and test their products.
