Yesterday, we were thrilled to facilitate a series of meetings that brought selected BC life sciences companies together with two outstanding organizations. United Therapeutics is a pioneering biotech company at the forefront of revolutionary technologies in rare lung diseases, oncology, and organ manufacturing. Johnson & Johnson Innovation Lab focuses on accelerating all stages of innovation worldwide and forming collaborations between entrepreneurs and its global healthcare businesses. It was a remarkable "Meeting Day" where eight exceptionally promising organizations engaged in one-on-one sessions to showcase their cutting-edge innovations and explore potential partnerships.

Oct. 30 was BC Non-Profit Day, celebrating the sector's significant economic and social impact. With their grassroots approach and responsiveness to community needs, NFPs deliver vital programs and services, uniquely positioning them to influence government policies, programs, and funding decisions.

Canada has announced a $15M investment, via funding from the CIHR, to create a groundbreaking Pan-Canadian Genome Library, which is set to revolutionize genomic data sharing across the country and increase researchers' and clinicians' understanding of health and disease, ultimately improving the health of people in Canada. The library will be hosted via SGEN, which includes the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer in Vancouver. Learn more.

 

The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) is launching the first phase of a public consultation on themes relevant to the development of new guidelines by inviting stakeholders to participate in a Policy Roundtable on December 5 (English session) and December 6 (French session). New provincial legislation, if passed, will remove regulatory barriers in BC and allow educated professionals from 29 professions, including engineers, teachers, and biologists, to seek credential recognition, no matter where they were trained. Learn more.

 

Canada has established an Implementation Advisory Group (IAG) as part of its first-ever National Strategy for Rare Diseases, announced earlier this year. This group will provide a platform for patients and stakeholders to offer patient-centred advice and share information and best practices related to rare diseases, ultimately guiding the implementation of the National Strategy. The Consulate General of Canada in Boston is offering a free virtual VC Bootcamp in early December for early-stage Canadian Life Sciences companies (those looking to do their first or an early Seed raise and have raised under $1M to date) seeking to improve their fundraising skills.


The program covers various life science sectors, including Biotech, MedTech, Digital Health, Diagnostics, and Drug Discovery. Topics include fundraising fundamentals, pitch coaching, IP/legal considerations, best practices, an overview of an online fundraising platform, due diligence, and pitch practice with investor feedback. To increase the number of medium and large businesses in BC, PacifiCan has launched a 3-year Business Acceleration Pilot designed to support the growth of businesses by providing access to capital and expert guidance.
