The Assault on Public Education

CORE member and Professor William Watkins brings together some of the nation's leading scholars and activists, including Pauline Lipman, Ken Saltman,  and Alfie Kohn, to explore and critique the effects of market-based policy on public-school reform in his new book, The Assault on Public Education: Confronting the Politics of Corporate School Reform. CORE is proud to sponsor a Book Party where you will have an opportunity to hear from Dr. Watkins and, if you desire, to buy signed copies of his book.  The book is intended to serve as an organizing tool for supporters of genuine public education.  It features an extensive critique of how corporations influence universal public education, an explanation of how wealth forges public policy, and a case study of the public school system in New Orleans.

Educator Event at Victory Gardens 

On December 8th from 5-7pm, educators are welcomed to Victory Gardens Biograph Theater (2433 N. Lincoln Ave) for cocktails, snacks and a preview of several social justice and arts related opportunities for them and their students. • Hear from union activists in the Caucus of Rank and File Educators and how they can connect to organizing opportunities.
• See a preview of Victory Gardens production of "Ameriville," a play about America from Katrina to the economic crisis using dance, poetry, hip-hop and how their students can see a full performance.
• Learn more about student art and activism through the Louder than a Bomb organization.
• See a preview of the film "The People Speak" based on the words and works of Howard Zinn and receive FREE curriculum materials, a copy of the film and more.
