Rep. Linda Lawson
HB1201 Signed into Law
House Bill 1201, the Companion Animal Sterilization Bill, was signed by Governor Pence, after passing unanimously out of both the House and Senate! The bill, authored by Rep. Mike Karickhoff and co-authored by Rep. Linda Lawson, requires that rescue groups and shelters spay/neuter prior to adoption, with an effective date of July 2021. The bill also establishes a registry of rescue groups and shelters, to be hosted by the State Board of Animal Health. This is a huge step forward, as Indiana joins 32 other states with similar bills.

Next year is a budget year at the Statehouse, and SNSI will continue to work with the ASPCA to seek funding. We realize that many rescue groups and shelters operate on shoestring budgets and are on the frontline of animal welfare work. It's our mission to make their jobs easier and to help them be more successful.
Heartworm Season
With the arrival of warmer weather, mosquitoes are already out, which puts dogs and cats at risk of heartworm. Heartworm is a life-threatening parasite that can grow up to 18" inside the heart of the host. Heartworm preventive is recommended for all dogs and cats during the mosquito season to give your furry friend the greatest protection against this deadly condition.

Pet Friendly license plate is #2
Thanks to all of you who have selected the Pet Friendly license plate for your vehicle! And thanks to SNSI's partner groups for promoting the license plate at events across the state. The plate is now the #2 most popular specialty plate in Indiana, moving up the ranks from #8 just a year ago! The plate funds thousands of surgeries each year, so it's vital that we keep the momentum going! Please consider the Pet Friendly license plate when you renew, and help spread the word about the importance of this plate.

If your organization is interested in receiving license plate marketing materials, including brochures, posters and postcards, e-mail Leslie at info@GetThemFixed.org, and we'll mail you a packet. Together, we can be #1.
Volunteer Highlight
Grace Berry has a big heart for animals and some time on her hands. She has been assisting SNSI weekly as a volunteer.

When asked why she volunteers, Grace said, "I looked forward to finding a place to volunteer once I retired. Over the past years, I attended several fundraising events for SNSI and met many people dedicated to helping animals in Indiana. I've seen the joy and companionship that cats and dogs bring to people and recognize the great need and importance of spaying/neutering one's pets. I'm happy that I've found a way that I can help animals and those who care for them."

SNSI is very grateful for Grace's assistance and dedication over the past year.

SNSI is a small, cost-conscious organization focused on helping animal welfare organizations and limited-income pet owners. Together, we're making a huge impact by preventing thousands upon thousands of animals from entering Indiana shelters. And, when animals do enter shelters, we help shelters get them fixed so they're adoption-ready.

SNSI does not receive funding from the government, the United Way or from other large sources. We rely on grants, bequests, fundraisers, the proceeds of the Pet Friendly license plate - and from individual donors like you who share our mission.

Your financial gift demonstrates that you share our mission and are committed to helping Indiana's animals.
Want to Earn a Quick $1000 for Your Rescue Group or Shelter?
If your 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization or municipal shelter houses animals, you can earn $1000 by registering and providing your data to Shelter Animals Count

This new, national database will ensure that consistent data is collected and will improve the ability to save animals' lives. As an added bonus, when you register and name an existing shelter partner as the group who referred you, they earn $500. This is a great way to work together to save more animals! The registration deadline is April 30th.

Note that Indiana House Bill 1201 establishes a registry of Indiana rescue groups and shelters. This registry will ask different questions, and we'll let you know when it's ready to unveil.
In Memory

Maria Sharp joined SNSI at the Statehouse for Voices for Animals Day this past January and also served as a volunteer at Southside Animal Shelter in Indianapolis. The board, staff and volunteers of SNSI were saddened by the recent loss of a true animal champion. We extend our sincere condolences to Maria's family for their loss.
