MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY

Livonia continues our hometown tradition of paying homage to those who gave their lives in service to our country at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Veteran's Park Memorial Plaza (15357 Farmington Road, northeast corner at Five Mile Road) with a special Memorial Day Ceremony.

Military salutes, a wreath-laying ceremony, special guests and music will honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Visit the Memorial Wall that also honors those Livonia veterans who were killed, wounded, imprisoned, or declared missing in any war or conflict since the founding of Livonia in 1835.

Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church will also be holding their annual Memorial Day Service and the community is invited, Sunday at 10:30. Details in the image to the left of this article.

"Go and make the world a better place."

Livonia says thank you to

Jeff and Kim Swan

for propelling our Livonia

Civic Chorus to new levels of excellence

Our Livonia Civic Chorus issued the following statement on the announcement that Jeff and Kim Swan will be stepping down from their positions with the Chorus:

"A big THANK YOU to Jeff Swan, Music Director, and Kim Swan, Accompanist, for their support over the past seven years. With their knowledge, encouragement, and dedication; our chorus improved individually and as a group to blend our voices.

"This Improved our concerts and our audiences let us know how much they enjoyed it!

"We will miss Kim and Jeff, but we wish them the best on their ongoing adventures."

All of Livonia shares this sentiment and wish Kim and Jeff all the best in their future endeavors but most importantly we thank them for elevating our Civic Chorus to new levels of musical excellence helping underscore the realization that Livonia is the cultural center of southeast Michigan.

One step closer to getting the facts on what it will cost to repurpose Noble Library

The Livonia City Council voted 5-2 to proceed with a study on the remediation costs and condition of the Noble Library. The library, located at 32901 Plymouth Road, was closed by then-Mayor Dennis Wright in 2019 due to mold and water leakage damage. While the library was initially considered for demolition, Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan delayed the decision, announcing this at her 2023 State of the City Address.

Councilwoman Carrie Budzinski, as quoted in the Observer newspaper, emphasized the building's value in the community and the importance of addressing residents' concerns. Council President Brandon McCullough has been leading the effort for a comprehensive study to determine the actual damage and remediation costs, advocating for a plan to preserve and repurpose the building for community services.

Furthermore, the council unanimously requested the city to maintain the exterior of the building. McCullough also announced that the council will hold a meeting at the Noble Library shortly.

Additionally, the council unanimously voted to require the administration to maintain the outside of the facility for the time being. During the council discussion, Councilman Rob Donovic reiterated his support for tearing down the Noble Library, citing low library usage due to the internet.

McCullough is the only one to draft a plan that includes funding for the improvement of Sheldon Park with more amenities and the repurposing of Noble. He has floated his comprehensive plan which to date has been met with "you will not get this."

Musings applauds the McCullough effort and has written extensively in support of his plan.

One criticism being made of Mayor Maureen Brosnan regarding Noble is off base, that being that she is concentrating too much on Five Mile and Farmington. She correctly should have this as a priority.

That and the staffing of the police and fire, which has greatly improved over previous administrations. That and the emphasis on Livonia non-profits, the youth forum, and the emphasis on involving young people in their hometown.

That and the study completed on infrastructure repairs needed on city-owned buildings and properties. A study on what repairs are needed shows the lack of vision from previous administrations.

Yes, I disagree with the Mayor on Noble, but I am willing to look at the positive taking place as items are taken off the back burner and placed at the forefront of Livonia's progress. The progress that is real and should not be denied as for too long Livonia has coasted, resulting in intellectual stagnation, the slipping into a moribund mediocrity.

So Noble Warriors keep up the fight but position yourself to also applaud and support the progress Livonia is making in so many areas. Let's be in a position to advocate to add Noble to the list of progressive changes being made by this administration.

Now let's go out and get the support for the McCullough plan that will make a difference.

This typewriter had been waiting a year for this event, having so enjoyed the first of what should be an annual Wine Pull, but as I was in Colorado I made sure to have a beverage fitting the occasion.

See you next year for sure. And thank you Rotary.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
