Tammy Bonifield tells Musings that she is not running for

re-election to the Livonia Board of Education

Tammy Bonifield, a trustee of Livonia Schools, has notified FridayMusings that she will not seek re-election this year. Consequently, her decision will create a vacancy for the November election. While incumbents Karen Bradford and Madeline Acosta are anticipated to run, Krystal Frank, another incumbent, has not publicly disclosed her intentions.

Elected to the Board in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 and 2020, Bonifield earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Michigan Technological University and is a Certified Public Accountant at a Northville firm.

Formerly the President, she currently holds the position of treasurer for the Livonia AM Rotary Club. Both of her children are graduates of Livonia Public Schools (LPS).

Bonifield's active participation in the community sets an example for Livonia's elected officials, demonstrating availability and leadership in the volunteer sector. Her community involvement has been a defining feature of her service on the Board.

Livonia Historical Society raises over $24,000 in 14 months

for projects directly benefiting our communities' heritage

The volunteer sector as embodied by the Livonia Historical Society continues to make an impact in so many ways. And in so many ways does Livonia benefit.

The Livonia Historical Society, established in 1956, continues to significantly impact our community with its robust membership of nearly 150. Over the past year, the society under the leadership of President Jim McConnell and with significant contributions to the Society from his wife Annette McConnell, has made strides that will enrich our hometown for the foreseeable future.

In collaboration with FridayMusings, the LHS raised $7,000 last year to enable over 450 second graders to experience a day at Greenmead, providing them with a glimpse into 19th-century life by visiting the historic village's buildings and the one-room Newburgh School. Many students don period costumes, adding authenticity to their historical journey.

Newburg School at Greenmead, a wooden clapboard schoolhouse was built in 1861 and moved from Ann Arbor Road, west of Newburgh, in 1987.

This year, the initiative has expanded, with over 750 students scheduled to visit Greenmead in April. Again, in partnership with FridayMusings, $10,000 was fundraised to facilitate this educational day.

Concurrently, the Livonia Historical Society, with FridayMusings, raised an additional $7,000 for the Bentley Historic Marker, which will be unveiled on September 15 at 2:00 pm at the former high school's site. This project is distinguished by the LHS's formation of a 10-member committee tasked with researching the high school's history and proposing the marker's inscription to the Michigan Historic Society which they approved.

Before the establishment of Bentley High School, students in the district attended Redford Union High School in Redford Township or Plymouth High School in nearby Plymouth. Due to the growing community, a decision was made in 1945 to construct a high school within the city. Although most community members preferred the name Livonia High School, it was ultimately named after George N. Bentley. Bentley was an alumnus of Elm Elementary School within the district and served on the school board during the groundbreaking in 1946.

Furthermore, the LHS preserved the original bell from Livonia's first school, Elm School. Currently, the Livonia Parks and Recreation Department is safeguarding the bell at Greenmead. With the Mayor's endorsement, the LHS anticipates installing the bell near the Historic Marker on the north side of the Kirksey Recreation Center.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
