Helping define Livonia's Quality of Life

Archive – Bill Joyner's Friday Musings

20 years publishing FridayMusings without bias but not without opinion

Partnerships continue to make it happen in our hometown

The Livonia High Nooners Lions Club showed up in force to help feed the hungry! The Kids Coalition Against Hunger provided the supplies, Madonna University graciously provided the facility, Lions Clubs International District 11A1 sponsored the event, and funding was provided by Lions Clubs throughout Wayne and Monroe Counties and many gracious donors. Special thanks to the Livonia am Rotary and Northville Lions Club for their continued support and volunteers.

When an event is over there should be time set aside to say thank you

We thank the sponsors and the community members who participated in

Passport to Safety, furthering our commitment to a secure and joyous hometown.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Cheryl Bowker, Allstate agency owner, for her dedication and sponsorship of the Livonia Passport for Safety. Her steadfast support for the past 25 years has been crucial.

The Passport for Safety has become a beloved annual tradition for families, young and old. It's a unique occasion where families come together, forging enduring memories for children that will be handed down to succeeding generations, magnifying the significance of a single morning in the parking lot.

We also wish to acknowledge the community supporters and the City of Livonia, including the Livonia Fire and Police Departments, Livonia Animal Control, Livonia Public Schools, and the National Weather Service, for their contributions.

Dr. Matthew Griffin, Trinity Health Livonia’s Chief Medical Officer and Lead Hospital Administrator, remarks, "Passport to Safety is fundamentally about equipping parents and the youth with essential knowledge and skills for their safety this summer, covering a broad spectrum of topics from fire and water safety to navigating social and digital realms responsibly."

Griffin's objective in having Trinity Health serve as a sponsor is "to inform and equip our children for a secure and enjoyable summer."

Stefan Rairigh from AlphaUSA, a company that has been involved with this event for 20 years and played a significant role in forming the 501 (c) (3), notes, "Learning is most effective when it's interactive and enjoyable for both children and adults. This year featured 10 interactive stations where children engaged in hands-on activities and demonstrations."

Thus, we thank the sponsors and the community members who participated, furthering our commitment to a secure and joyous hometown.

Drew Buatti for Livonia School Trustee.

A new perspective aiming to take our public schools to the next level of excellence.

Two Livonia Board of Education candidates have distinguished themselves among early applicants. FridayMusings has endorsed incumbents Trustees Madeline Acosta and Karen Bradford, citing their exemplary, transparent, and accessible service. Musings joins those in Livonia advocating for their continued office tenure.

Among the new candidates eager to serve their community, one stands out: a Stevenson High School alumnus who served as class president is committed to community service through active participation in the Livonia Rotary Noon Club, and believes in quality customer service, working at Von Mar as a sales consultant.

Drew Buatti is canvassing the district, engaging with teachers, administrators, community stakeholders, and students to gather their insights on enhancing the quality of education. He is not content with the standard assertion that "our Livonia public schools have a great educational system." Instead, Buatti is delving into the operational aspects of the system and is ready to assume the role of Trustee from day one, poised to ask pertinent questions and seek solutions that will elevate our public schools to new heights.

While the educational establishment seeks out candidates, one incumbent Tammy Bonifield, is stepping down having decided not to seek another term, they would be well served to embrace Buatti for a position on the Livonia Board of Education.

Community leaders are standing up and endorsing Buatti, including Council President Brandon McCullough who says that "while we are encouraging our young residents to be engaged Drew Buatti is already engaged in civic service, articulates educational issues, and is one who wants to improve his hometown. I am happy to endorse Buatti for School Board."

Musings considers five key traits when endorsing candidates for a position on the school board: possessing a clear vision for the district, setting achievable goals, concentrating on student achievement, fostering positive relationships within the district, and engaging with the community.

Five reasons FridayMusings is endorsing Drew Buatti for Livonia School Trustee. A new perspective aiming to transform and take our public schools to the next level of excellence.

3rd year hosting a Pride Celebration

In Our Hometown Livonia We Believe

People Matter

Love is Love

Our Differences

Make Us Rise Taller

The first year featured a flag-raising event with several hundred attendees on the City Hall porch. Mayor Maureen Brosnan delivered a presentation, affirming Livonia's commitment to being a welcoming community and its intention to continue fostering this spirit.

The second year witnessed the Livonia Democratic Club collaborating with the Livonia Human Relations Commission to host a celebration on the City Hall Campus, drawing well over a thousand attendees. This event further highlighted Livonia's reputation as a community that embraces all.

In its third year, the initiative sees further growth, with the Livonia Republican Club joining forces with the Livonia Democratic Club and the Livonia Human Relations Club to sponsor the Pride Celebration.

Pride celebrations offer numerous benefits to a hometown, nurturing a sense of community, solidarity, and support. To Musings here are some key benefits to our hometown:

Solidarity and Support: Pride events enhance the visibility of the LGBTQI+ community, which is essential for solidarity and the continued struggle for human rights.

Mental Health: They create a welcoming environment where LGBTQI+ individuals are celebrated, diminishing feelings of isolation and fostering improved mental health outcomes.

Community Engagement: Pride celebrations motivate residents to participate more actively in their community, bolstering local businesses and benefiting the local economy.

Positive Representation: They serve to challenge prejudice and discrimination, providing a stage for LGBTQI+ individuals to share their stories and campaign for equal rights.

Volunteerism: Such events bolster community pride, inspiring residents to speak favorably about their town and volunteer for the greater good.

In essence, Pride celebrations are more than just parades and festivities; they signify a deep dedication to equality, diversity, and the welfare of all community members.

Farmville. A community once known for tobacco farming and markets now a promoter of the arts

I visited the renovated Paramount Theatre in Farmville, a place I often attended shows as a child with my brother Bob and cousin Sue. I vividly recall the balcony designated for people of color, who, after buying their tickets, would enter the theater through a separate door and ascend the stairs. Those were the days of the 1950s in the South.

The Farmville Community Arts Council has now assumed control, established a gallery adjacent, and is staging plays, thereby converting this former town hub into a nurturing cornerstone for a flourishing arts community.

Boone Hall in Charleston South Carolina

Boone Hall Plantation was established in 1681 by Englishman Major John Boone, who set up a prosperous plantation and elegant home along Wampacheone Creek in Charleston.

In 1743, Major Boone's son planted a double row of live oak trees, creating a breathtaking avenue leading to their home, a lasting symbol of the South's legacy. Over two centuries, these towering oaks with their moss-covered branches grew to arch together, forming the iconic natural corridor seen today.

I could not get enough of this corridor realizing that the trees were nearly 300 years old.

The history of the past is important. The difference is in how that history is presented.

“Exploring The Gullah Culture” at Boone Hall is a unique presentation where that difference can be experienced firsthand.

Boone Hall is the only plantation in the Charleston area to present a live presentation of this unique culture adapted by African slaves.

True descendants of the Gullah people present the history of this culture through storytelling, song, and dance that is at times educational, at times entertaining, and at times…very moving and emotional.

The journey concluded at the Big Easy Cajun Restaurant alongside the bodyguard and her sister. They indulged in a 1.5-pound loaded potato, while I opted for the catfish. It was delightful. Now, we're back on the road, heading home.

Race for Michigan's 12th Congressional District. Democrat Rashida Tlaib is unopposed in the Democratic Primary.

James Hooper, Livonia resident, is seeking the Republican nomination for Congress

James Hooper, a Republican Party candidate, is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Michigan’s 12th Congressional District. He is on the ballot in the Republican primary scheduled for August 6, 20241.

He has served overseas in the mission field with Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia, West Africa leading a team of Liberian nationals and international mission teams rebuilding The African Bible College University (ABCU), and then later with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) helping to bring a Franklin Graham Festival to Liberia.

Later he managed a Water Sanitation, Hygiene (WATSAN) program for Samaritan’s Purse in a remote Liberian border area near Cote d’Ivoire. After returning from the mission field, he served as my mother’s primary, then full-time caregiver as she battled and eventually passed from Alzheimer’s.

Hooper describes himself as a “blue-collar Republican” from Detroit’s east side with a background in the building trades. If elected, areas of public policy Hooper is passionate about include promoting American energy independence, lowering taxes, and eliminating the U.S. Department of Education.

James Hooper is competing in the Republican primary alongside Linda Sawyer.
