Helping define Livonia's Quality of Life

City Council Set to Move Forward on the City Center Redevelopment

This typewriter can’t think of anything more appropriate than celebrating the city’s

75th Anniversary by building the infrastructure for the next 75 years.

Talk is about to become action in the long line of Livonia Vision 21 success stories over the past few years. A vision developed through a process of community engagement and driven forward by Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan is now moving forward with yet another step in the right direction. The people of Livonia have asked for a Town Center, and our elected officials are going to make that happen.

On Monday, July 8th, the City Council will begin the process of funding and planning out a key development at Five Mile and Farmington. As we've all heard, the next step is moving City Hall and the Police Station and making significant renovations to all of our city’s Fire Stations. These actions will clear the space necessary for the commercial and residential developments to produce a Town Center. We already know our current City Hall and Police Station are inefficient, outdated, and nearly inaccessible for residents who use wheelchairs. This investment in our community will solve those issues while giving Livonia a more efficient campus with a central gathering park space that we can all use.

This plan has been developed, workshopped, discussed, and debated since the first meetings of the Livonia Vision 21 Committee in 2017. As promised by our Mayor last year, the true catalyst is rebuilding the Senior Center in a new location. With the Senior Center groundbreaking last month, now the stage is set for even more exciting and transformational change in the heart of Livonia. That will ensure that we build, as Mayor Brosnan says, a city our children want to come home to.

Monday evening, the Council will hear more about how we can initiate the funding method and secure a contract with Plante Moran Realpoint to maintain and reinvest in success – the same way Livonia Public Schools can reinvest in the community with its improvements through its bond issues. If all goes as expected, when the City Council approves these steps later this month, the City will have the tools to begin designing our new campus. It’s anticipated that if we can move on this now, we could see “shovels in the ground” at a new City Hall site by fall of 2025.

11 days before Livonia Celebrates Shakespeare in the Park Year Three

The cast, shown above at their initial read-through over a month ago, has been working tirelessly to prepare, under the direction of Joe Johnston pictured here, for the Livonia Community Theatre's free presentation of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Stymelski Park in Livonia.

This summer marks the third anniversary of Livonia Shakespeare in the Park, featuring one of Shakespeare's most cherished and approachable comedies.

The typewriter made a stop at Stymelski Park to test the stage before the set was installed. I began as a drama major at Central Michigan, but things didn't go as expected, so now I seize the opportunity to use a stage when it's empty. I prefer not to risk too much embarrassment. However, I'll be there on opening night. In the audience.

Don't miss out! Refreshments will be on sale, or you might consider packing a picnic and bringing a blanket or lawn chair. As you can see the crowd two years ago settled in and enjoyed an evening under the sky.

Thanks to the sponsors who are helping bring this annual performance to our hometown--Livonia Parks and Recreation, Livonia Community Theatre, Theatrica Gladiatoria, the Hardies Trust Fund.

Franklin High School graduate Nino Monea

is now a professor at West Point

after graduating from Harvard

Nino Monea, a Livonia Franklin High School alumnus who pursued his studies at Eastern Michigan University, had not envisioned a career in law. However, as undergraduate paths often shift, he found himself enrolling at Harvard.

Monea worked for Prosecutor Kim Worthy one summer, Clerked for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget McCormack another summer, and was sworn in as an attorney by Justice McCormack once he graduated from Harvard Law School.

During his third year at Harvard, he was elected as the student government president of Harvard Law School by its approximately 1,800 students, becoming a representative voice at America's oldest college.

Now, as a Franklin High School, Eastern Michigan University, and Harvard Law graduate, he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Law Department at West Point.

On a recent visit back home, he made time to connect with his friend Wayne County Commissioner Glenn Anderson.

Shakespeare under the stars and on the 26th the Great Greek Food Truck. This is just one of the nights you can find food and Shakespeare.

Livonia Firefighters present two 2024 scholarships to graduating seniors

Livonia Firefighters present two 2024 scholarships to graduating seniors

Paige and Jaden are your Livonia Firefighters scholarship winners for 2024!

They were selected through our process where Livonia Firefighters seek out student leaders in the community who have always looked out for those in need.

Paige will be attending the University of Michigan, studying political science in the hopes of becoming a lawyer.

Jaden will be attending Michigan State University to study neuroscience.

This scholarship is awarded to two seniors enrolled in a Livonia area high school yearly.

Volunteers make an impact year round.

Touch-a-Truck last year put smiles on the faces of over 7,000 children, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. An unbelievable event providing yet another definition of the quality of life in Livonia.

Coordinated by the Churchill High School Interact Club in partnership with the Rotary AM Club this is a volunteer-driven event.

In addition, two Anonymous Community Benefactors have donated 5,000 Mattel Hot Wheels to be distributed as families arrive. Distributed by volunteers who have reached out and said I/we want to help.

They each dropped a dime on the typewriter and said count me/us in. If you would like to be a part of helping pass out the Hot Wheels you can also drop a dime and let me know.

Looking for 8 more fun-loving volunteers to be a part of this exciting day.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
