Helping define Livonia's Quality of Life

20 years publishing FridayMusings without bias but not without an opinion.

The Joyner family has called Livonia home since 1959.

Tunes & Latte Afternoons Finale at Anastasia and Katie's Coffee Shop!

Anastasia and Katie's Coffee Shop & Cafe has had an incredible summer of musical performances at the Coffee Shop, and now it's time for their Finale! Join them this Friday, August 23rd, as they welcome back the talented musicians who have shared their skillsets throughout the summer, performing at different times between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.:

Steve Gilbert - Singing soulful sounds from folk, country, and blues genres, and playing guitar.

Jack “Elvis” Fisher - Local Elvis tribute artist, performing and singing Elvis tunes.

Cob Greene - Playing upbeat acoustic songs of all types and lots of folksy originals.

Francis Ernzen - Serenading us with a variety of “coffee shop” songs.

Don't miss out on this last delightful musical experience of the summer and the chance to enjoy great coffee in a cozy atmosphere. The Coffee Shop will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., serving their full menu. Note: Their last day of extended Friday summer hours will be Friday, August 30th.

A &K sends "A big thank you to everyone who has come out to support our performers and enjoy a cold drink in the courtyard, and to the Livonia Community Foundation for supporting this series."

Reaching out and touching the lives of folks with disabilities providing work in a supportive environment

Anastasia and Katie's Coffee Shop & Cafe, which opened in December 2019, quickly became a cherished spot among our employees and the community. The establishment was founded to foster a space where individuals with and without disabilities can work together in an inclusive, supportive environment. Their employees are provided with training, onsite support, and a paycheck, all while contributing to the community.

The cafe offers robust coffee, a variety of non-coffee beverages, breakfast, lunch, and baked goods. It operates as an employment initiative under the nonprofit organization Mi Work Matters.

Through the coffee shop and the Employment Ambassadors advocacy program by Mi Work Matters, they initiate discussions on the potential for businesses to employ individuals with disabilities. The coffee shop is named in honor of Anastasia and Katie, the daughters of two of the nonprofit's co-founders, who are teenagers with Down syndrome.

The partnership of Rotary Interact and Rotary AM Club works to bring Livonia another quality of life project. And boy is it fun.

The weekend has arrived. The Churchill Rotary Interact Club is empowered with student volunteers to orchestrate the day. The Livonia Rotary AM Club is prepared, with tasks assigned and high expectations for the day. Musings joins the effort with 25 volunteers assisting in the distribution of 5,000 Mattel Hot Wheels, to delighted children.

Furthermore, Livonia is poised to celebrate the success of yet another local project that showcases creativity—a defining feature of our community. This project fosters family engagement within Livonia and highlights the advantages of having a robust volunteer sector.

The City Appears to be

Moving Forward on the

7-Mile/Farmington vacant lot

On Monday, August 19th, the City Council conducted a Committee of the Whole meeting regarding the development proposal at 7th and Farmington.

The project is advancing with an approval motion, including amendments for the addition of trash bins, public art, and shade trees in the pocket parks, as well as cart technology to retain shopping carts on-site.

A vote is scheduled for the upcoming City Council meeting on Monday, August 26th at 7 PM.

There has been extensive discussion about the building's display sign across several meetings. Before this meeting, the developer proposed a smaller sign size that complies with city ordinances, eliminating the need for a variance.

What motivates FridayMusings:

We can't only define Livonia as taking small steps toward maintaining the way things were. That will give us mediocre outcomes. Our goal needs to be innovative and transformative.
