Bill Introduced to Rename Saratoga National Historical Park as Saratoga National Battlefield Park

U.S. Reps. Elise Stefanik and Paul Tonko introduced the "Strengthening America’s Turning Point Act" on Tuesday to rename Saratoga National Historical Park as Saratoga National Battlefield Park.

The movement to rename the park began on June 18 when the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution formally requesting the National Park Service and Congress put “battlefield” back in the park’s name. The supervisors said the effort was made in an attempt to honor the long history of the park and the role it played in the 1777 Battles of Saratoga during the Revolutionary War.

“Saratoga County deeply appreciates Congresswoman Stefanik and Congressman Tonko for introducing this legislation to restore the Saratoga National Historical Park to Saratoga National Battlefield Park.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga the timing of this change is helpful, as Saratoga was the pivotal Turning Point in the American Revolutionary War, marking the first time in world history that a British Army laid down its arms. This name change would distinguish the park as a historical battlefield and provide a unique identifier to clearly inform tourists of the significance of the park to American independence.”
