Kashrut Alerts

The fish department at Kroger's no longer has a supervised kosher section.
Fish that is purchased there should be treated like fish bought from a non-kosher facility.
Once you have seen that it is a Kosher fish, you may let the store scale it with a scaler, since the scaler is used only for Kosher fish.
All fish should be washed well before usage, since they will come in contact with non-Kosher fish. If the fish is cut with a non-Kosher knife, that entire area
must be washed very well. It is highly preferable to scrape off about 1/16" from the area that was cut. Obviously, there is much less concern if you buy the entire fish.
Streit's "Kids Dark Chocolate Coins" and "Kids Milk Chocolate Coins"
The Orthodox Union does not certify Streit's Chocolate Coins (made in Turkey) and considers them as Non-Kosher products. Further, the unauthorized OU mark on the Dark Chocolate Coins should not be relied on to assume they are dairy free. This product was produced without authorization by the manufacturer. Streits is recalling and destroying the product.

Meet the Woman Who Keeps Tootsie Rolls Kosher

 By Tova Ross

If you keep kosher, and enjoy eating a handful of Tootsie Rolls or drinking a tall glass of Gatorade, you have Phyllis Koegel to thank. As marketing director of the Orthodox Union's Kosher Division, Koegel is charged with convincing companies of the financial and commercial benefits of going kosher-and getting the OU symbol, the most widely recognized kosher-certification in the world, on their product.
Koegel has been all over the world, from China and France to Germany and Italy, and most major cities throughout the United States, to make the case for OU kosher certification, which she's helped secure for hundreds of products. The only female executive among the in-house OU Kosher staff of more than 55, she works out of a nondescript corner office on the 12th floor of the building at Greenwich Street and Broadway in Manhattan where OU Kosher is stationed.

Chanukah a Distant Third to Passover but Growing Each Year
New York...If you are Hallmark, you sell more Chanukah cards than any other religious card. If you are in the gift business and have kosher offerings, your business may have increased by as much as 20% in just the last three years. Chanukah (eve of December 16th)  is the third most lucrative time of the year for the kosher food industry, trailing only Passover and the High Holy Days. With Chanukah parties leading the way, the 8-day holiday which marks the miracle of the one day supply of oil which burned for 8 days in the Temple, will mean increased sales. Almost all sectors of the kosher food store or section experience a higher volume in sales. There are, of course, the latkes (potato pancakes) and the doughnuts which do particularly well but retailers say that they sell more meat than usual during the holiday as well as side dishes, a reflection of the family gatherings that take place over the holiday. Most kosher retailers also stock Chanukah candles, oil, and dreidels. Sales of frozen potato pancakes as well as apple sauce in 2013 rose by as much as 15%, say the retailers. For those who wish to "patchke" (fuss) over latkes there are latke mix products from such companies as Manischewitz, Streit's and Gefen. Strawberry-filled doughnuts lead the way in the US with caramel flavored doughnuts being a major leader in Israel.

Breaking News... More Woes for Kosher Coffee Drinkers as K-Cups Omit OU Symbol

Woodcliff Lake, NJ...Although coffee was always considered one of the "safer" beverages to consume for people who observe kosher, it has become much more challenging in recent months, leading rabbis told a convention of Agudath Israel of America. The latest culprit is none other than the popular Keurig machines used by large numbers of kashrus observers in their homes and offices. According to Rabbi Moshe Elefant, COO of the Orthodox Union (OU) Kashrus Division, certified kosher K-Cups used in the machines no longer have the OU symbol on the individual cups although they remain on the boxes that they come in. Thus, a kosher consumer who randomly finds a K-Cup without a box may inadvertently be using a non-certified K-Cup causing one rabbi to suggest that the user of such a Keurig machine might have to refrain from using the machine for 24 hours, run a kosher K-Cup through the machine and even kosher the two metal pins. Many ordinary consumers attending the convention were outraged at the Vermont-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. for removing the symbols from the individual cups.

Starbucks fans were also warned to avoid stores that sell other items besides coffee as well as kiosks in many malls that may share dishwashers with other non-kosher franchise brands. Rabbis speaking at the convention of Orthodox Jews from around the country explained that some of the equipment, glassware and other utensils could be contaminated by being cleaned with non-kosher versions in a Starbucks store. They warned consumers to be aware of the environment where the coffee is being purchased.
