Workshop: Global Health from CABI

On Monday, May 13, 2-3pm library staff are hosting a Global Health information session that will include an overview of Global Health, a public health resource available through the Einstein Library. Hope Jansen from CABI will cover the subject area coverage, types of material included, areas of unique information, and comparison to other databases, as well as use of Global Health in systematic reviews and other complex searches.

Global Health has recently moved to a new platform, CABI Digital Library, and we will also do a brief demo/training on the new platform, and we are happy to answer any questions.

Register for the in-person workshop here.

About Global Health: Global Health is the leading specialist database dedicated to public health, completing the picture of international medical and health research by providing unmatched access to all the world’s relevant public health research and practice. With access to millions of records including full-text articles, reviews, news, and book chapters Global Health supports study, research, and practice.

Where are the books?

As part of the renovation, library bookshelves have been dismantled. Library staff worked diligently as a team to pull the books from the shelves to assure that construction could begin on schedule. This is the status of the print book collection:

·      12,000 books are stored off-site and are retrievable upon request. Delivery to Einstein takes about two business days. You will be notified when to pick up the book at the library.

·      5,000 books are shelved in the library’s administrative offices and are retrievable upon request. Library staff will pull the book for you within one business day. You will be notified when to pick up the book at the library.

This project has given us an opportunity to review, fine tune, and update our print collection. Many of our older books that were duplicate copies, superseded by a newer edition, available as e-books, and have not been used in the past 20 years, are being donated to two organizations:

·      The Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library founded in 1996 that provides free access to collections of digitized materials including websites, software applications, music, audiovisual and print materials. Its mission is committing to provide "universal access to all knowledge".

·      Better World Books, a bookstore that uses proceeds from its discount books sales to donate books to non-profit organizations worldwide. In addition, its grants fund literacy projects for libraries and educational nonprofits. Better World Books is a B Corp™ certified.

During the next few weeks, we will be packing the books we are shipping to the Internet Archive and Better World Books. If you would like to help us with the packing, please sign up for a 1-hour time slot here.

A small number of older books were discarded, particularly those in poor condition or damaged beyond repair.

After the renovation, there will be shelving for approximately 2,000 books in the new reading room. We will also maintain the off-site storage and shelving in the administrative area. Librarians will continue to update and curate the print collection.

Keep in mind, the library’s collection includes over 40,000 e-books, which are available 24/7, wherever you happen to be.
