This Week On your bikes, get set, go! Get out and about this week 2nd of July reading of Frederick Douglass Save the date for next month's Block Party The Bikes are Back in Town A big round of applause for the City of Beverly for the new downtown bike racks! Now is the perfect time to dust off your old bike and start breaking up your work week with some healthy, environmentally friendly commutes. You can find new bike racks at key locations along Rantoul Street, with another batch for Cabot Street on the way.

There's no excuse to stay home this week!

For teens in grades 6-12, the library is teaching the ancient art of candy sushi making on Wednesday, June 29th from 3:30-5:00pm. There will be prizes, we've been told. What's the point of drinking if you don't look cool while doing it? Gentile Brewing is making it easier than ever to artfully imbibe with their upcoming Beer Mug Painting event on Thursday, June 30th from 6:00-9:00pm. Like deuterium and tritium, glass is better when fused together. On Thursday, June 30th from 6:00-8:00pm, you can fuse to your heart's content at Clay Dreaming, creating a splendid suncatcher. BYOB. Comedian Orlando Baxter is doing a set at Off Cabot on July 1st from 8:00-9:30pm. We've seen this guy on YouTube, he's funny-- but if you don't believe us, go see for yourself this Friday. This Independence Day weekend, kids ages 2-8 can express their patriotism in the most responsible way: making bald eagle cupcakes. Find this fun activity at Taste Buds Kitchen on Saturday, July 2nd from 9:00-10:00am.

Music to my ears

Ken Clark Organ Trio are performing at Backbeat Brewing Company tonight, June 28 at 7:00pm. They're bringing out special guest saxophonist John Aruda for this show, so there's plenty of reason to get excited. Andrew Harney and some friends from Berklee College of Music are playing at the Cabot Theater on Wednesday, June 29th from 7:00-10:00pm. I can Harney wait! These cats are cookin'! Saturday, July 2nd from 5:00-7:00pm, Harney and Norm Zocher are gonna hang out and play jazz guitar at Delphine's Kitchen. Old Planters Brewing Co is hosting Labor in Vain on Saturday, July 2nd from 7:00-10:00pm. Expect a lively show of folk, blues, and country as you put down a pint.

Reading Frederick Douglass Together

Join Historic Beverly at Hale Farm on Saturday, July 2 from 10-11am, for a community reading of Frederick Douglass’s powerful speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” as part of the Reading Frederick Douglass Together initiative. A collaborative endeavor with the City of Beverly, Beverly Public Schools, Salem United, Beverly Human Rights Committee, North Shore NAACP, North Shore Juneteenth, and other local individuals and organizations. Special guest speakers include Douglass historian and interpreter Nathan Richardson, who will contextualize the speech and the impact of Frederick Douglass' decades of work as an abolitionist and human rights advocate, as well as conduct an informal Q&A.on Independence Day from abolitionist Frederick Douglass, with interpretation from historian Nathan Richardson.

Charity Concert at Off Cabot

Chin Friction, an eight-piece rock band, including a horn section that has been rocking the North Shore and Boston for over 35 years, is performing at Off Cabot on July 21st, from 6:00-10:00pm, with proceeds going to Kiwanis Club of Beverly, a nonprofit working to reduce hunger and improve literacy and opportunities for children, and the Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce, a supporter of local businesses in Beverly and beyond. Sponsorships are still available and tickets for the general public will go on sale this Thursday, June 30th around 1:00pm. The show will be catered by Super Sub and is expected to sell out quickly, so keep an eye on the GBCC's social media and be ready to rock!
