From the Minister

My Dear Friends—

Happy New Year! And Happy Epiphany! As we move into the time when we mark the ways Jesus has been revealed to us, it’s fitting that we should do so as we reflect on a year gone by and a year to come. Mandi and I will be away in St. Louis this weekend to celebrate her step-grandad’s birthday—remarkably, he’ll be celebrating 100 of those years gone by, even as we look forward to yet another year of his warm, jovial presence in our lives. As we look back on the joys and challenges of the past year and look forward to the milestones that lie ahead, where do we find the presence of the divine?

This Sunday we’ll welcome the Rev. Dr. Natalie Fenimore, Lead Minister of the

Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock on Long Island. Her sermon is titled, "To Go By Another Way", and she'll preach about Epiphany as a sudden realization, a revelation of something essential. In Eastern Orthodox Christian theological terms Epiphany is celebrated as theophany – the celebration of the revelation of the infant Jesus as God Incarnate visited by the Magi. How might we reflect on the physical and spiritual journey of the Magi as they approached the manger and as they traveled home by another way? Rev. Fenimore will preside with our own Rev. Mary Katherine Morn as we lean into this sacred time of reflection and anticipation. May 2023 be a blessed year for us all.

In faith and love,

David

From the Bench

The morning star will shine very brightly for Epiphany Sunday in organ settings by Buxtehude and Reger. The choir will encourage you to be merry and glad this good new year in William Walton’s What Cheer, and testify that they did indeed see the star in the dark night with Isaac’s Vidimus Stellam

Upcoming Events

Theology on Tap: New Beginnings

Wednesday, January 18 6:00 PM

at the Parish House and on Zoom

As we begin a new year, our thoughts may turn to resolutions and ways we want to live differently. There is much in our faith tradition that speaks to us of metanoia or “turning.” How might we embrace this idea in our own lives and in community with one another? Come join us as we explore new possibilities! Register here for Zoom.

Concert: Pinkham 100

In the Midst of Wild Being

January 22, 5:00 PM at King's Chapel

We kick off the Daniel Pinkham centennial celebrations with a program juxtaposing his music with works by two other Cambridge composers who have celebrated significant birthdays this past year.

Pinkham’s In Heaven Soaring Up for chorus, oboe, and harp, was written in 1986 for King’s Chapel’s 300th birthday and features the stunning poetry of colonial minister Edward Taylor. Carson Cooman wrote In the Midst of Wild Being for chorus, horn, and harp, for the 50th anniversary of the Concert Series; we are thrilled to have a chance to repeat Carson’s setting of the evocative poetry of Elizabeth Kirschner. Newly composed for this occasion, Graham Gordon Ramsay’s Songs of Love and Longing compile diverse poetry by Emily Dickinson, Amy Lowell, Denise Levertov, and Siegfried Sassoon.

As always, you save $5 by buying tickets in advance.

Lecture: "The Unspeakable,"

with Rev. Dr. Heather Fraser-Fawcett

Monday January 30th 6:00 PM via Zoom

How do we sit with what is so often unspeakable? The Rev. Dr. Heather Fraser Fawcett will be offering a reflection on her work and ministry with refugees, particularly with survivors of organized violence and torture. In this loving, sacred community of King’s Chapel and guests, we have the hearts and minds to sit with what is. Rev. Heather dedicates this presentation to the Spirit of Hope and Resiliency, and to all who have suffered from the Unspeakable.
