From the Minister

My Dear Friends—

This week our lessons present us with the theme of seeing and believing—though one doesn’t necessarily follow the other in these stories! This week also finds me preparing for my interview with the UUA’s Ministerial Fellowship Committee on Saturday—the last milestone on the way to becoming eligible for ordination as a UU minister. I ask your prayers me in this exciting, challenging, bittersweet time.

From the Bench

We open with another poignant Bach prelude on Sunday, this one in b minor. The choir will sing more Lenten motets by Palestrina, Pinkham, and Poulenc in a preview of our Renaissance Man concert coming up March 26th. The postlude, also by Bach, is based on the chorale O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig.

Lenten Activities

Living Lent: Scarcity or Abundance?

Book Group

Mondays through April 3 at 6:00 PM via Zoom

On Mondays during Lent, join your clergy as we explore our theme, "Living Lent: Scarcity or Abundance?" The book we're following is Between Midnight and Dawn: A Literary Guide to Prayer for Lent, Holy Week, and Eastertide.

There are copies of the book available to borrow. Let Lin Nulman, our office assistant, know if you'd like to have a copy set aside.  It is available on the web for purchase, new or used ($6 to $19). Please register here to participate.

Easter Crafts at the Parish House

Sunday March 26 10:00 AM - Noon

All young children and their parents are invited to Easter Crafts on Sunday, March 26, at the Parish House, 64 Beacon St.  We'll dye eggs, make cards for our elders, decorate cookies, make crosses from palms, and have time to play together while learning about Easter. Crafts are specially designed for children 0-8.

Please let Laura know if you'll be joining us:  laura@kings-chapel.org.

Environmental Conversations: The King's Chapel Member Action Initiative

Tuesday, March 21, 5:00 PM, via Zoom

This month, the Environmental Action Initiative Conversation will consist of an informal Zoom gathering of members and friends of King’s Chapel. This is the start of what we are calling the Member Environmental Action Initiative. How are you feeling about the climate crisis? What are you doing in response? Are you feeling like you might want to do something but you are not sure what?

We are assembling information about what members of our congregation are thinking and doing, so that it can all be shared to build a stronger community. Check it out here; see if you have any questions, and let us know if you yourself have items to add. (No worries if not. This is not a test.) Come and spend an interactive hour with your KC environmental community at 5:00 PM on March 21. Register here.

History Highlights: Comical Categories Virtual Talk

Thursday, March 23, 6:30 PM

This virtual 45-minute Zoom talk will be a tapestry of King's Chapel history tidbits. Inspired by the Oscars and awards season, we will use award categories to present interesting people, objects, and events. Sometimes there is competition, and sometimes only a winner, but there will always be a good story!

Tickets are pay what you can with a suggested donation of $5 and can be purchased on Eventbrite here.

King's Chapel Concert Series presents

Renaissance Man: Pinkham 100

Sunday, March 26, 5:00 PM

Dan Pinkham was instrumental (and vocal) in the Early Music revival of the 20th century, and gave many American premieres of rediscovered works that had never previously been performed on these shores. Early Music was also a big influence on a lot of his own music. In our final concert of the season, we explore this connection in Renaissance Man, a program consisting of Pinkham juxtaposed with Palestrina, Victoria, Gabrieli, and Gesualdo, and also with more modern contemporaries Poulenc and Hindemith, who shared many of their sensibilities.

As always, you save $5 by purchasing tickets in advance.

Memorial Committee Update

Members of the Memorial Committee are combing through over 50 responses received through the inquiry and the email link provided, with plans to reach out within the next week or so to those parishioners who requested a personal contact. Simultaneously, they are preparing a synopsis of the input received to be shared with the membership, MASS Design and the artist, Harmonia Rosales.

Meanwhile, Cliff Allen has returned from hiatus and is in the process of reconvening and expanding his subcommittee to reinvigorate efforts to plan for the Living Memorial. As these tasks move forward, the members of the Committee will begin preparations for a congregational meeting scheduled for Palm Sunday, April 2, 5:30- 7:00 PM via Zoom. Harmonia Rosales, the artist, has asked to participate in this meeting and will likely be in attendance to engage with us directly. So mark your calendars, and plan to join in the conversation as we work together to forge a path forward. Click here to register for this event.

"We Weep With Those Who Weep, And Rejoice With Those Who Rejoice" ~Romans 12:15

We hold in prayer our former Warden, Lee Glenn, who recently suffered a second stroke. She has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility. The best way to reach Lee is to record a short video of yourself on a smart phone: Just speak your message. Contact Joy if you’d like to do that and we’ll arrange to forward it to Lee’s family.Joy@kings-chapel.org

We also pray for Bill and Madolyn Wilson as Madolyn receives a new, serious diagnosis to explain her frequent internal bleeding and concomitant transfusions. Please pray for their ongoing strength and hope, during what has been a very long illness. They can be reached at their home in South Dartmouth: 27 Summer St., South Dartmouth, MA 02748
