From the Minister

--The Reverend Mary Katherine Morn

Nine years ago last month I preached my last regular sermon as a parish minister after 27 years of Sundays. Since then I’ve preached many times as a visiting minister in congregations as I represent the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee around the country. But preaching this coming Sunday at King’s Chapel is a particular delight and honor. Since joining four years ago I’ve been very grateful for the gift of being in the pew (and online!) as part of a church so ably led in worship by Joy and David.

As an infrequent lectionary preacher, I confess I looked with trepidation when Laura sent me the lectionary selections. Click here to read more.

Parish News and Upcoming Events

Sandwich-Makers STILL Needed

Sunday, Aug 6, 10:00- 10:50 AM, at the Parish House

Another set of hands is still needed to assemble lunches for Common Cathedral!

Having lunch and/or attending a service with our unhoused neighbors, 12:30- 2:00 PM, is an incredible blessing, and we would love to have you join us. All parishioners are invited to attend the service at Brewer Fountain after Morning Prayer on Sunday! The next date is Oct 1, followed by a Dec date, possibly the Dec 24 .

If you have a BJ'S or Costco card and could occasionally be a substitute shopper on Thursday or Friday before Common Cathedral, we will provide a list and instructions.

Please contact Carol Genovese if you are interested in signing up to help or want more information.

Workshop on Gender, Theology and Pronouns

Wednesdays, Aug 30 & Sept 20, 6:00- 7:30 PM, on Zoom.

How can we make sure we, as a community, are welcoming to trans and gender-nonconforming people? How do our ideas of gender affect our faith? On Wednesdays August 30 and September 20, the Adult Religious Education Committee is hosting "Gender, Theology, and Pronouns" a two-part workshop from 6:00- 7:30 PM on Zoom. Amanda Pickett and Tim Nelson-Hoy will share information and hold space for discussion about the use of pronouns, and how ideas of gender affect our relationship with each other, and with God.

Participants are urged to attend both sessions, but it is not required. For further information, contact Tim Nelson-Hoy at tim.c.nh@gmail.com. Please register in advance with either Tim or Laura Zeugnerlaura@kings-chapel.org.

Memorial Project Update

As you might imagine, since the approval of the Memorial Project proposed at the annual meeting on June 4th, the Memorial Committee has been busy moving both the living and physical components of the project forward.

Final Summer BBQ

Monday, August 21

6:00 - 8:00 PM in the Parish House Garden

The BBQs are potluck picnics, and we ask that you bring beverages, a salad, or a dessert to share, if possible. The Fallons will provide the hamburgers, veggie burgers, sausages and hot dogs.

Please RSVP to Laura to let her know you're coming and what you will bring.

Joy’s Schedule

Rev. Joy Fallon will be on vacation for two weeks with her mother in western New York, August 4-18. If you need pastoral help during that time, please contact either Laura Zeugner or our new Director of Administration and Finance, Cheryl Sullivan. Both know how to reach Rev. Fallon. Rev. Fallon will arrive home in time to host our next BBQ on Monday, August 21 at the Parish House Garden.

COVID’s Ticking Back Up

As the local news reports, COVID cases are increasing again in our area. In our own church, an active member and one of our staff reported positive COVID tests last week. Both had mild cases and have recovered. I had been exposed, so I masked during our services last Sunday, other than when I delivered the sermon. We’ll continue to be careful, and you are encouraged to wear a mask while inside at the parish house or at worship, if you choose. Whenever possible, we’ll take advantage of our wonderful outdoor spaces to reduce the risk of transmission. Blessings for good health to you all.

History Program News

In August we continue to be open to share the chapel and its history with visitors 7 days a week! Our hours are Sunday 1:30-5:00 PM, and Monday- Saturday 10:00 AM- 5:00 PM. (On Tuesdays, History Program closes from 11:15 AM- 1:30 PM for the midday recital, to which all are welcome.) Guided tours continue on their usual schedule and ticket prices, now including Sunday afternoon tours.

August 11 is the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the beautiful Georgian chapel in 1749. Glance at the plaque above the front doors commemorating the cornerstone this week and next, and imagine the special occasion that must have been.

Looking Back

On July 22nd and 23rd, Emanuel Genovese taught a mosaic class at his home studio. Pat Bass and George Boitano joined Emanuel and Carol to learn about this ancient art and to create some of their own.

Thank you to Emanuel for sharing his knowledge, and George and Pat for sharing their creations with us!

Last week we held our July BBQ, where we celebrated the departure of our beloved Parish Administrator, Gretchen Horton. The weather was unexpectedly stormy but we moved the festivities into the parish house and enjoyed the many culinary contributions from the congregation. We were grateful for the opportunity to gather with Gretchen and her wonderful family and to send her off into her well-deserved retirement. We wish her all the best! Thank you to everyone who came and especially to those who helped with set-up, grilling and cleanup!

We rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep ~ Romans 12:15

We weep with Jennifer Kronstain on the sudden death this week of her mother, Sue Kronstain, after recent heart issues. For several months, Jennifer has been living in the Philadelphia area and has been able to spend significant time with both parents. We join in prayer for Jennifer, her sister and father, and the many friends of her mother. Cards can be sent to Jennifer at:

With great sadness, we share that our longtime member Nell Borgeson died a week ago from cancer. A tribute to her remarkable life - including as a late-in-life film director - is found here: https://www.keefefuneralhome.com/memorials/nell-margolis-borgeson/5242146/index.php.

Nell and her husband Gregg Borgeson, who loved our Morning Prayer service, were also stalwart regulars at the Children's Service in the Little Chapel while raising their beloved children. A Celebration of Nell's life will be held at King's Chapel in the next few weeks and all are invited; information will be shared when available. Let us join in prayer for Gregg, their children, and Nell's many friends, as we mourn her passing.
