"...founder and winemaker Dave Phinney remains deeply involved, pointing out that Gallo's distribution clout has let him focus more on the vineyards and winemaking...
That said, Phinney's stylistic imprint is on all these wines, which exude big, ripe fruit. If it is tart, lean wines you favor, you have been warned."
-Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Hello Artisans,
We've just received our annual allocation from Orin Swift Cellars, the original pioneer in blockbuster Napa wine and creator of The Prisoner. Founded by midas-touch David Phinney in 1998: Orin is his father's middle name and Swift is his mother's maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company into a multi-national brand that now includes 300 acres of vineyards in the Southwest of France. This international ambition has led to projects in Spain, Italy, Corsica, Argentina and other locations around the globe.
For some further background reading, here's a great article from Decanter Magazine.
For today's offer, we are focusing on the Papillon - "Papillon" is one of their most sought after wines and and is instantly recognized from the memorable label, a photograph taken by the famed celebrity photographer Greg Gorman of human hands tattooed with the wine's namesake. This one is always a Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend, adding Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec to the mix. We've also got the Palermo, another Cab blend, plus Machete, Abstract and two vintages of 8 Years in the Desert. We have 36 bottles of Papillon, and only 12 bottles each of the rest. Our 24-hour sale ends midnight tonight!

2021 Orin Swift "Papillon" Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
91-93 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"Still not bottled at the time I tasted it, the 2021 Papillon Red Wine is a five-variety Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) that spends 13 months in 44% new oak. It offers up bold cherry and cassis aromas on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and velvety, with a long, almost zesty finish. Drink 2024 - 2035." - Joe Czerwinski (May 2023)

2021 Orin Swift "Palermo" Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
90 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"Traditionally, Palermo included wine that didn't make it into Mercury Head or Papillon, but winemaker Dave Phinney now buys some fruit specifically targeted for this bottling. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Palermo—a blend of estate-grown and purchased fruit aged 11 months in 34% new oak—includes small proportions of Merlot and Malbec. Offering up cherries, cassis and slightly earthy scents, plus hints of cinnamon and nutmeg on the nose, it's full-bodied and nicely balanced, with its firmness matched by softness. It's just a nice drink overall. Best After 2023" - Joe Czerwinski (May 2023)

2020 Orin Swift "Machete" Petite Sirah Blend
3x WS Top 100 Wine (Ranked #6, #33, #97)
92+ Points - Wine Advocate (2019):
"The 2019 Machete Proprietary Red is a Petite Sirah-based blend, with additions of Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel and Viognier. Sourced from Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, it offers layers of bold blueberry fruit on both the nose and the full-bodied palate. Rich and concentrated, yet supple and long on the finish, with soft, dusty tannins and hints of cocoa, it's a solid effort that manages to nicely conceal its stated 16.1% alcohol."

- Aged for 14 months in French Oak, 34% New
- 15.7% Alc./Vol.

2022 Orin Swift "Abstract" Grenache Blend, Sonoma County
92 Points - Decanter Magazine (2021):
"Black cherry and kirsch, with pronounced oak, vanilla and chocolate notes. Broad and mouthfilling, with a deep concentration of blueberry fruit, black currant, vanilla and mocha. Grippy, angular tannins resolve with good acidity and a lengthy finish of earth, chocolate and cedar. This label was first introduced after the Prisoner sale, having debuted in 2009. 'With over 75,000 square miles of California represented in this blend, it is a true amalgamation,’ says Dave Phinney. The blend for Abstract begins with Grenache, and then they weave in Syrah and Petite Sirah, but the combination and blend differ from year to year." (Dec 2022)
- Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah
- Aged for 8 months in French Oak, 21% New
- 15.4% Alc./Vol.

2020 Orin Swift "8 Years in the Desert" Zinfandel Blend
91 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The exact proportions and origins of the 2020 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert are deliberately kept fuzzy by the winery, but the wine does include Petite Sirah, Syrah and Barbera in addition to Zin. Aged in roughly half new oak, the nose brings an overlay of vanilla to a core of ripe blackberries. Full-bodied and open-knit, it adds briary, herbal notes on the palate, plus a bit of cracked pepper. Soft, dusty tannins mark the finish, along with hints of mocha and bittersweet chocolate. Drink it over the next several years." - JC (May 2022)
90 Points - Wine Spectator:
“A bold and brawny blend, offering straightforward dark berry and savory spice flavors. Ends with a peppery accent. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Barbera. Drink now through 2030. 29,000 cases made.” - TF (Aug 2022)

2022 Orin Swift "8 Years in the Desert" Zinfandel Blend
94 Points - Decanter (2021):
"Overflowing with ripe, dusty red berry fruit, vanilla-tinged, turning to blueberry and revealing dried spices and a sandalwood touch. Full-bodied, silky and deeply fruited at first sip, turning to mixed berry compote, balanced by grippy tannins. This is juicy, and even at this alcohol level, it’s balanced and long." (Dec 2022)
