Berkhemer Clayton Thanks You for 25 Years in Business

Hard to believe it was 1994 when Berkhemer Clayton was launched!

During these twenty-five action-packed and gratifying years as pioneers in executive-level diversity recruitment, we are pleased to have made a positive difference in the business landscape and in people's lives. As a retained executive search firm, we have the unique privilege of consulting with companies, universities and large nonprofits at the highest levels. We built trusted relationships over the years and we are here to stay.

Looking back on all our relationships with organization leaders who engage us, doing business is still based on chemistry, confidence, and trust. Berkhemer Clayton opened for business before there was email, personal computers and long before smart phones. We used fax machines and dial-up phones then! But we kept pace with progress and continued to evolve and grow.

Our clients have become friends and partners who rely upon us. Our staff have been with us as many as 16 years, and no fewer than five years. We enjoy working together, and we benefit from each other's specialized expertise. We are always striving for improvement, but we have fun along the way.

Berkhemer Clayton enjoys being a boutique search firm. We outperform the big firms because we think big, work smart, and stay agile. It's how we provide better client service, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Our clients also get the best service because we purposely limit our number of client searches. This affords us the most effective involvement of all team-members on each engagement. The candidates we present to our clients have often told us, even if they were not selected, they felt well-treated, valued, and their confidentiality was honored at all times. Happily, some of those former candidates – even those not selected – have hired us for searches at their current companies. We consider that to be the highest compliment.

Thank you for this journey – we look forward to serving you for many more years to come.

California Law SB 826 is Making an Impact Across the Nation, Encouraging Corporations and Other States to Follow
As statewide board member of the California National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO-CA), Betsy was one of the prime movers behind the passage of SB 826, carried by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara. First in U.S. history, this pro-business law requires at least one women director on every public company board in the state by year-end 2019, and a total of three women by year-end 2021. Among Russell 3000 and micro-cap public corporations, this means 184 new board seats will be added for women this year, and a total of 1,060 in three years. For companies that want to reach beyond their own immediate networks to find candidates, Berkhemer Clayton offers our corporate board specialty practice. One fourth of all California corporations have no women directors. As of 2018, only 17.3% of all board seats in California were held by women.

Betsy has been interviewed by Bloomberg, CNBC, NPR, KNX, the LA Times, and media in Orange County, San Diego and San Francisco about why having more women on boards of directors is good for business. Studies by Credit Suisse, McKinsey and others show that companies with women on their boards are more profitable, more productive and the workforce is better engaged. That's why the State Legislature passed SB 826 – so that the California economy could have the benefit of the brainpower and talents of women on corporate boards – as a competitive advantage.

As the fifth largest economy in the world, California should be the first state to embrace this issue. California has more Russell 3000 public companies than any other state (438), more than New York, Connecticut and New Jersey combined!
Because of California, other states have started their own legislative efforts: Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and New Jersey.

Check out all companies, at www.2020WOB.com , and click on Directory. You can easily see the number of women board members by company, by state, by industry sector. This annual research is produced by 2020 Women on Boards, the education and advocacy nonprofit where Betsy is CEO.

Every year, 2020WOB presents the annual "National Conversation on Board Diversity" (now in 32 cities) and "Get on Board!" Workshops around the country where women learn how to navigate their own careers toward public company boards.

Chaired by Renee Fraser and Betsy, the Los Angeles 2020 Women on Boards luncheon will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019, at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown Hotel. For more information and registration please visit National Conversation on Board Diversity Los Angeles

Congratulations, Fred!
