Through the Looking Glass

Maimonides explains when discussing the law of setting up Jewish day schools in every town that "the world exists only for the breath of Jewish children studying Torah."

Rabbi Silvestri discusses how these words were the needed therapy for a leader of a Jewish Day School in the aftermath of the devastating news from Israel this past weekend.

Exploring Consciousness

This week in Mr. Cell's 11th-12th grade Psychology class, students explored the history of psychology as a science, with a focus on the contributions of William James. As a key figure in the philosophy of pragmatism, James introduced the concept of the stream of consciousness, greatly influencing the field.

Morning Investigations

This week, Ms. Morrison's 2nd-grade class kicked off each morning with Investigations, a time for students to explore and practice various skills through interactive games and activities. Each day, students have the freedom to choose their learning investigation, with options like spelling word memory, math games, story writing, independent reading, and the class favorite—sight word slap! These activities allow students to learn, collaborate, and play with their peers while having fun. Ms. Morrison tracks their choices on a chart, encouraging them to try something new each day and fostering growth and excitement in their learning.

Alphabet Adventures

This week, Morah Aviva's EC4A class focused on the letter “Bb” in the Alphabet and the letter Bet in the Alef Bet. The students engaged in fun activities that promote beginning writing skills and fine motor development in both Hebrew and English. Additionally, the children explored loose parts, rubber bands, and geo boards in the Math Center. As part of their All About Me unit, the classmates participated in discussions, sharing their favorite foods and animals. They then had the opportunity to include their choices in their individual All About Me books.

Thematic Connections

Middle schoolers in Ms. Ruben's English Language Arts classes are diving into their thematic units this week by reading informational articles that provide essential background knowledge. As they learn more about the main topic woven into the class novel, they gain a deeper understanding and can make meaningful connections while reading.

Reading Champions

Mr. Simon’s third-grade class celebrated their reading achievements for August! Each month, prizes are awarded for reading, with students completing reading logs throughout the month and being recognized at the end. The August reading champions were Yehonatan Shitrit (1st place), Sam Ludmir and Alex Gerenstein (tied for 2nd place), and Mimi Banks and Naya Halifi, who won 3rd place! The prize for first place is a $10 gift card to AMC Theatre, while second place winners receive a giant Hershey bar and a prize from the Treasure Chest. Third-place winners also receive a prize from the Treasure Chest. Congratulations to all the winners!

Exploring Uniqueness

This week, students in Morah Sandy's EC3A class focused on their “All About Me” unit. The class had a great time measuring and weighing themselves and comparing their results. They traced their hands, made thumbprints, and compared their eye colors. The students enjoyed exploring their differences while also noticing what they have in common!

Tefilah Time

First Grade Tefila time with Morah Ester is going great! Each day, the class is excited about their conversations with Hashem, and learning different aspects of Tefila helps them engage with more passion. The students discovered that through simcha (joy), they can create a more meaningful Tefila experience.

Personal Timelines

Ms. Morrison's 4th-grade class is excited to kick off their social studies lessons with a special project: creating personal timelines! Students collaborated to develop the project requirements and even created their own grading rubric. After gathering pictures and listing significant dates or events from their lives, they will compile everything into a timeline poster. Each student will present their timeline to the class, providing an opportunity to share their life stories, take pride in their experiences, and set goals for the future. We can't wait to see the unique timelines they create!

Letter B Bonanza

This week in Morah Elisheva's EC4B class, students learned about the letter B and the Hebrew letter Bet! They decorated their letter Bs and discovered many words that start with B. Outside, they had fun playing alphabet tag and participating in an alphabet race. They also created an ocean sensory bin for an engaging hands-on experience!

Curriculum Night Insights

We enjoyed welcoming our lower school parents to campus this week for our annual Curriculum Night. We were excited to offer parents a deeper insight into their child's educational journey and how their specific curriculum fits within the overall scope and sequence of the lower school program. Parents learned more about our lower school specialties, including STEAM, Robotics, Physical Education, and Art, as well as our student support and counseling departments. They had the opportunity to meet their child's individual teachers and interact with the materials used in class. Teachers reviewed their curriculum goals, grading and assessment rubrics, and homework expectations. If you were unable to attend, please reach out to your child's teachers to request a copy of the materials handed out.
