Commemorating Yom Hazikaron
We started the week solemnly commemorating Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Day of Remembrance, for the 25,040 fallen soldiers and victims of terror who died 'al kiddush Hashem'āsanctifying the name of God through their ultimate sacrifice. Heartfelt thanks to Harel Bassan, Shaliach at the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, Natan VP, Idit and Naamah, our dedicated Bnot Sherut, and all participating students for orchestrating a meaningful ceremony that honored these heroes and strengthened our commitment to remembrance and resilience.

Yom HaAztmaut Celebrations
On Tuesday we joyously celebrated Israel's 76th birthday and independence. The festivities began with a beautiful tefillah and musical Hallel, followed by the raising of the flag, singing, dancing, and our annual Middle School Daglanut (flag dance) performance, captivating everyone. Throughout the day, our students enjoyed a host of celebratory activities, including bouncy castles, art crafting, cookie decorating, and making pita and limonana. Lower school students took part in "beach" yoga and a Tzahal obstacle course, while upper school students indulged in falafel and hummus, participated in a scavenger hunt, and competed in a "Name that Song" contest. As we celebrated, our thoughts remained with those in Israel, continuing to pray for their safety and the immediate release of the 130 individuals still held in captivity.

Exploring JFKās Legacy
This week, Mr. Simonās third-grade class delved into the life and presidency of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. Over the past two days, they explored JFK's domestic policy, known as "The New Frontier," which included the creation of several programs aimed at assisting the underprivileged. These programs ranged from "Head Start" for early education, to economic redevelopment in impoverished areas, and support for Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights movement. The students showcased their knowledge on whiteboards, presenting their findings to the class.

Counting to Sinai
This week, Morah Aviva's EC4A class wrapped up their Yom Haatzmaut/Israel unit and began enhancing their number identification and counting skills with a numbers 1-20 activity packet. Each page of the packet allows students to trace and write the numbers, learn the number words, engage in number correspondence, count, and color. Additionally, each morning, the class counts the days of the Omer. A child is selected daily to count the flowers leading up to Har Sinai and place the corresponding flower number on the chart, while Morah helps them make the appropriate bracha. This has become a highlight of each day, as the children excitedly track the blooming flowers up Har Sinai. The children are also joyfully developing their building and engineering skills by creating patterns and vehicles with geometric shapes.

Rousseau Revisited
This week, Beren alum Sascha Ayach ('22) returned to deliver a presentation on Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political philosophy to Mr. Cell's 11th-12th grade Honors Economics/AP U.S. Government class. Sascha explored Rousseauās key Enlightenment ideas, discussing his views on the state of nature, the social contract, and the origins of inequality, providing valuable insights into the influential thinkerās theories.

Holy Days
This week, students in Morah Sandy's EC3A class explored Parsha Emor, focusing on the Yamim Tovimāthe special holidays they've studied throughout the school year. This topic provided an opportunity for students to review their favorite aspects of these holidays and express their enthusiasm through crafts that symbolize major events in the Jewish year. Additionally, they discussed and dramatized the concept of Kiddush Hashem, emphasizing the importance of honoring Hashem by behaving ethically, especially in public settings.

Unity Through Art
In observance of Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut, Upper School students constructed a wooden mosaic Israel flag with kinetic elements. Among the nearly 700 tiles that make up the flag are 132 ā representing the 132 hostages still being held in Gaza ā with yellow ribbons painted upon them, along with those individualās names. As hostages are released, G-d willing, tiles with yellow ribbons will be turned around, thereby completing the flag. The message that this project seeks to convey is that the 10-7 terrorist attack and ensuing hostage crisis have had a shattering effect on the State of Israel and the Jewish people. Hopefully, as the hostages can be freed and brought back home, Israel can be pieced back together and made complete again.

Fraction Fun
Fourth grade students in Ms. Klausner's class are progressing in their study of fractions and have recently mastered adding fractions with unlike denominators. The students were reminded of the critical role that finding the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) plays in this process. To reinforce this concept, they engaged in an exciting game where they raced to find the LCM before their classmates, enhancing both their understanding and speed in handling fractions.

Learning and Celebrating
This week, Morah Clara's EC3B class celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut with a variety of fun activities. They learned new Hebrew words starting with the letters Shin/Sin and the letter Y. Additionally, the students began exploring the significance of Lag BaOmer and practiced counting up to 25, enhancing both their language and numerical skills.

Courtside Clash
The bleachers buzzed with excitement this Tuesday during our thrilling annual staff vs. students basketball game. Energized by the return of alumni Ahron Guttman ('12), Steven Mitzner ('04), and Isaac Mirwis ('12), our staff team clinched a nail-biting victory for the fourth consecutive year, edging out the students by just one point with a final score of 45 to 44. The competition had everyone on the edge of their seats!
