SCREAMING EAGLES AND CATARACTES UP NEXT FOR DOGS

The Saint John Sea Dogs are headed to Sydney to take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for the first time of the 2012-13 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season. The Sea Dogs have been used to beating up on the Screaming Eagles of late, but that may change.

The Sea Dogs sit fifth in the Maritime Division, only one spot and two points ahead of the Scream Eagles. Saint John carries a record of 8-8-0-0, good for 16 points. Jonathan Huberdeau is leading the charge with 10 goals and 10 assists in 16 contests. Overagers Stephen MacAulay and Kevin Gagne are doing their part after returning from Hamilton Bulldogs training camp.  MacAulay has tallied seven goals and added six assists for 13 points in 12 contests. Gagne added another two goals while tying Huberdeau for the team lead with 10 assists. Seabstien Auger has played the third most minutes in the league to start his sophomore QMJHL season, and has a .907 save percentage and a record of 8-6-0-0. He also has a perfect record in the shootout, facing 6 shooters and turning each one aside.

The Screaming Eagles are in sixth place in the Division with a record of 5-8-2-2 and 14 points. Alexandre Lavoie and William Carrier are taking care of business for the Eagles with 10 goals apiece. Lavoie has added 17 helpers for 27 points in 17 contests, putting him in eighth place in league scoring. Carrier has 16 assists for 26 points and is 11th in league scoring. Phillipe Trudeau has carried much of the weight for Cape Breton and has a 3-5-1-2 record and an .890 save percentage.

Fans can catch all the away action on the TELUS QMJHL Webcast or by tuning in to News 88.9 FM where Tim Roszell has the call.

After their date with the Screaming Eagles tonight at 7 PM, the Sea Dogs return home to take on the Shawinigan Cataractes who are going through a rebuilding year. Shawinigan is now sitting in the QMJHL basement with a 2-11-1-1 record and are without a win in their last 10 games.

The Cataractes leading scorer is 19-year-old Frederick Gaudreau with three goals and 10 assists in 15 games. Dylan Labbe is the leader amongst Shawinigan's 15 rookies with two goals and seven assists in 15 games. Tickets for Sunday's contest are available at the Harbour Station box office, by calling 657-1234 or by visiting tickets.harbourstation.ca.

SEA DOGS TAKE TWO OVERTIME WINS AND ONE LOSS

The Saint John Sea Dogs played 3 games in six days over the last week. First up saw a 4-3 overtime victory over a pesky Prince Edward Island Rocket (soon to be Islanders) squad.

Stephen MacAulay opened the scoring with his seventh goal and Canadian Hockey League Import Draft choice Jakub Izacky added to the Sea Dogs lead with a great goal after intercepting a blueline pass and streaking into the zone to beat Legace on the breakaway.

After taking a 3-1 lead on a marker by Olivier LeBlanc, The Sea Dogs hit a short skid that saw PEI captain Josh Currie score a pair of goals to tie the game and into overtime we went. Kevin Gagne notched his second of the season at 2:44 of the extra frame to seal their first of back-to-back overtime wins.

The second came against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Sunday. Marcus Cuomo scored his first QMJHL goal with only 9.6 seconds left in the game to tie it up and force overtime. The Sea Dogs rode the momentum boost to the win with a goal by Oliver Cooper at 1:56 of the extra frame.

The Blainville-Boisbriand Armada were in town next for a Halloween contest. The Armada would take the game 2-1on goals by Tommy Giroux and Cedric Paquette. Ryan Tesink had the lone goal for the Sea Dogs with assists to Jonathan Huberdeau and MacAulay.

The three games brought the Sea Dogs record to an even 8-8.

SEA DOGS ROOKIE ANXIOUS TO GET STARTED

Matthew Highmore is in a strange position. The Sea Dogs drafted Highmore eighth overall in the 2012 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft and he comes with a ton of promise, but the 16-year-old has yet to play a game.

Highmore is still on the road to recovery from off-season shoulder surgery and has recently started taking part in non-contact drills at practice. After 15 games on the sidelines, you can imagine he is getting antsy.

"It was exciting," said Highmore. "Anytime you can get back onto the ice after a period of time that you haven't been there is always exciting. It felt nice."

However, like everyone who steps away from an activity for a period of six months, there was an ease in factor to be considered.

"I think everybody expects a lot of themselves, but when you've been off for so long like I was, it was kind of just getting out there and trying to get a feel for things again," Highmore said.

Rewind to the 2012 QMJHL draft and you'll find Highmore on the stage in a Sea Dogs jersey as the eighth pick, Saint John's first of the day. The Halifax born left-winger has plenty to prove after being taken so high and according to Sea Dogs Nova Scotia scout Sid Veysey, he brings a broad skill set.

"I like his skating, he's got a quick first step,'' said Veysey. "As far as the passing and playmaking, he's kind of like Sidney Crosby in that aspect of the game, and that's what we like about him. He has outstanding vision and playmaking skills, he's a great passer and he competes hard and goes hard to the front of the net, and he works hard in the corners."

Fans will get a chance to see Highmore's skills at work in the future, adding to a promising talent pool of Sea Dogs prospects.
