Incredible Knowledge
WINE AND HEALTH, PART 1 The medical profession has recognized the nutritional and health benefits of wine for thousands of years. Recent archeological evidence shows that wine was in use as a pharmaceutical as early as 3,150 B.C. Hippocrates recommended specific wines to purge fever, disinfect wounds, as diuretics and as nutritional supplements around 450 B.C. The earliest known printed book about wine was by a French doctor in 1410. Wine has been used to decrease anxiety, promote digestion and aid in sleep. In November of 1991, the television news program, "60 minutes" reported a phenomenon known as "French Paradox". This began a new era in research into the very important health benefits of red wine. The French Paradox is this: The French populance enjoys a diet rich in cheese, fatty meats and creamy sauces, yet has a lower risk of heart disease than almost any developed country. This has been partially attributed to the prevalence of red wine as their beverage of choice. We will explore the French Paradox more next week in Part 2. What is Cenosillicaphobia the fear of?
