A group of attendees at the Kalona Creamery tour on Oct. 5 learn about the technology used in the creamery's milk receiving bay. More than 100 people attended the event to learn about the creamery's history and how different dairy products are produced, including cheese curds, ice cream and Kalona SuperNatural organic products. Three groups rotated among the creamery, the production area and the Kalona Farms receiving bay.

We Are Hiring a Habitat and Farm Transfer Coordinator
We are seeking applications for a new, full-time habitat and farm transfer position, based in our Ames office. The deadline to apply is Oct. 21. Key duties include:

  • working with PFI staff, farmers, landowners and external partners on farmer-led events and research related to on-farm prairie, edge-of-field conservation practices and habitat management

  • creating a network of farmer and landowner leaders in on-farm prairie and habitat

  • building networks with farmland owners

  • organizing regional events to strengthen PFI’s farm transfer program

Kristten and Garrin Buttermore invite you to gather with other farmers and supporters, and share a meal. You'll have a chance to tour the Buttermores' farm and expand your personal community while sharing in this year's successes and challenges. 

Kristten and Garrin started Uncle G's Farm in 2016, where they raise pastured chickens, outdoor-raised pigs, free-range laying hens, a few cows and several dogs. Learn more about the social on our Facebook page.

Derek and Molly are the primary farmers at Echollective Farm, a cluster of farmers, interns and volunteers cultivating 14 acres. The farm includes a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers, and specializes in several heirloom hard-neck garlic varieties.

The farm distributes produce through a CSA, New Pioneer Food Co-op, restaurants and farmers markets in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
