Beginning Beekeeping at St. Louis Community College


St. Louis Community College at Meramec has re-opened enrollment for Introduction to Beekeeping, through midnight, 2/21/2024


Bees play an important role in naturescape and agriculture as pollinators of flowering seed, berry, fruit and vegetables which provide for food, fiber, spices, medicine and animal forage. Come learn how to attract and provide habitat for native bees and honey bees. Introduction to getting started managing honey bees and learn about products of the hive.


Jane Sueme will be teaching Introduction to Beekeeping in two sessions, in preparation for this upcoming season.

This Introduction to Beekeeping class will cover -


  • Similarities and differences between native, solitary and managed bees
  • Basic solitary and colonizing bee biology and behavior
  • What's involved in getting set-up with honey bee colonies
  • Equipment and honey bee starter colony options
  • Site planning, necessary equipment & required management time
  • Calendar target dates for important management tasks in Zone 7a


Class will include live PowerPoint instruction with tailored hand-outs.
