Message from Anna McKeown, Recreation Department Director

regarding the closure of all Beede Center pools:

Beede Center Patrons,

We are disappointed that the Beede pools will need to remain closed through Monday, May 8th in hopes of opening Tuesday, May 9th. If the pools are ready to reopen before this date, they will.

What should have been an easy fix is proving to be more challenging than the Beede team and the consultants anticipated. We have shocked the pools for a third time at levels calculated by Weston and Sampson. That process takes at least 24 hours for “soaking” followed by a chlorination reduction period and then full chemical balancing with an assumption that the combined chlorine will be fully removed. This process will leave the timeline for the Health Department to inspect the pools to be Monday, May 8th.

Weston and Sampson’s chemical specialists continue to provide guidance on the next steps and our team is working diligently to monitor the pools and follow their guidance. Our team has taken every measure to seek help and remediate the issue including outsourced water testing, new testing kits, main drain pipe scoping, on-site visits with consultants, and more. We have been reaching out to neighboring pools to see if our members can use other facilities while ours is offline with no luck. To show our appreciation for your patience, we will be extending memberships and offering access to various Beede resources with the following:

  • All 3-month memberships and 10 punch passes will be extended by the number of days the pools remain closed.
  • Full pay and annual memberships will be extended by the number of days the pools remain closed.
  • Classes and programs that are affected by the closure will be rescheduled and/or refunded for missed days.
  • Monthly, recurring memberships that do not have an end date will be offered:
  • Free day passes to Emerson Pool and White Pond this summer for the number of days the pool remains closed. Passes will be sent out when the pools have reopened.
  • Free passes to drop into 2 land or water fitness classes this spring or summer. Details of how to redeem these passes will be sent out in the next few days.

We want to also remind you that your membership provides you with access to our upstairs cardio and strength rooms and our team of personal trainers would be happy to provide any new users with an orientation if interested. These spaces remain open while the pools are offline.

We will continue to communicate our plans to reopen and welcome you to call the Beede Center at 978-287-1000 with any questions. We thank you for your continued patience as we work to bring the pools back online.

Thank you,

Anna McKeown

Recreation Director

10 Reasons to Try Water Exercise

  1. Water’s buoyancy reduces impact on joints.
  2. Zero gravity in deep water enables the spine to decompress.
  3. Water immersion improves circulation resulting in better respiratory and heart functioning and reduction of joint swelling.
  4. Exercising in water fatigues muscles and reduces stress which contributes to better sleep.
  5. Resisted movement in all directions results in muscle balance and joint integrity.
  6. The safe environment enables weight loss.
  7. The ability to work longer and harder and increase range of motion and muscular strength results in enhanced functional fitness.
  8. The water allows for vertical core training and is a safer environment for people with back issues.
  9. Water exercise provides cross training opportunities because of the ability to run and jump higher and use all out force against the water’s resistance.
  10. Exercising in water FEELS GOOD and leads to EXERCISE ADHERENCE!!!
