Community Inclusion Month

BeConnected was pleased to join the Province of British Columbia, CLBC, Inclusion BC, partner organizations, self advocates, and other individuals/allies, in recognizing October as Community Inclusion Month.

The month is an opportunity to recognize the hard work of individuals, families and community members who create inclusive communities and opportunities for all British Columbians with developmental disabilities.

This year the proclamation recognizes the importance of inclusive housing, employment, health and well-being and self-determined Indigenous strategies.

Read the proclamation here.

To celebrate, BeConnected organized a pancake breakfast! Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Self Advocates for a Brighter Future also joined in the celebration by hosting a special October Themed SANGO which included information about Community Inclusion Month, Disability Employment Month, elections, and more!

Employee and Service Provider Appreciation Gala

Thank you to all BeConnected personnel for your hard work and commitment to the individuals and families we serve.

We're so glad we were able to get together and celebrate those who reached years-in-service milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years as well as all other personnel.

We would not be able to do the excellent essential work that we do, without you.

Halloween Party

We had a spooktacular time at our Halloween Party this year with great food, costumes, and music! Congratulations Morgan on winning best costume!

Annual Friends and Family Holiday Lunch

We had such a great time, welcoming over 150 individuals, families, friends, and personnel to our annual Friends and Family Holiday Lunch. We had music, dancing, a delicious lunch, and a special guest appearance - Santa!

SOCK Drive and Special Holiday Food Drive

This holiday season BeConnected held our annual SOCK drive! We collected warm socks and small comfort items for individuals experiencing homelessness. This year we were able to donate over 75 socks and toques to the Rock Bay Landing Homeless Shelter!

This year, we also held a Holiday Food Drive! The number of individuals and families who rely on food banks have increased but food banks have seen a decrease in donations. Victoria Food Banks are anticipating shortages this year. BeConnected was able to donate 8 boxes full of non perishable food items to the Mustard Seed Food Bank.

Thank you to everyone who contributed!

Memoir: My Magical Experiences as a Small Town Boy

Home Share Provider Colin Eckstrand has written a memoir which shares his magical experiences as a small-town boy, growing up in Powell River.

Colin writes of his insights into athletic events and experiences, and why they continue to occur throughout his life--to this very day. The magic happened in all aspects of his life and included highlights of a grace that has continually visited him and his family.

Personnel

International Workers

After attending the Diversity Works! Employment and Immigration in the Capital Region Summit back in June, a seed was planted.

We are currently working with an organization which will assist us in bringing international workers to BeConnected!

We have met and interviewed many individuals to assess for skills, experience, and cultural fit, and invited 8 of them to come and work with us.

We expect our new workers to arrive in Canada early in the new year! In the meantime BeConnected’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee will be planning ways to welcome our new team members.

We hope to introduce our new employees in our next newsletter!

Welcome New Personnel

BeConnected has welcomed 36 new employees and contractors since our last newsletter!
