Tamarack House Home Coordinator Ginger Prettie is embarking on trip to Europe to walk the Camino. Learn more about the Camino and hear what Ginger has to say about her upcoming trip!
"I am walking the Camino de Santiago Portuguese Coastal Route.
The Camino is a pilgrimage that has been walked by millions of people over many centuries. It follows the route of the apostle St. James across Portugal and Spain ending at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostella and the tomb of St. James. Traditionally the pilgrims carried scallop shells to identify themselves as pilgrims and receive food and water from the residents along the way. Today, people from all over the world walk the Camino following markers with yellow arrows and the scallop shell.
During the walk you collect stamps from various places along the way in your Camino Passport (or Credencial), which identifies you as a pilgrim. When you arrive at the Cathedral de Santiago you present your Credencial and they award you with a Compostella Certificate and a Certificate of Distance indicating you have completed the Pilgrimage and to show off to your friends when you get home!
There are many routes you can walk. I chose the Portuguese Coastal Route and will start at the Cathedral in Porto, Portugal and will be walking up the coast of Portugal, through historical villages alongside the Atlantic Ocean then cross over into Spain and continue along the Galician coast until I reach the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostella, Spain. The total distance is 280 km, however I am also walking the Spiritual Variant which adds another 98 km.
Wish me luck! Or better yet, wish me a Buen Camino!"
