Thanksgiving: Eat healthy and stay on a budget


While some students go home for Thanksgiving and Winter break, other students decide to stay near campus during this time.
The holidays often prove to be a particularly challenging time when campus dining halls and cafes close their doors. Thankfully, there are many options near campus that will allow you to eat healthily and stretch your budgets.

Staff Highlight: Meet Justin Castello, Clinical Psychologist in Social Services


Justin Castello, PhD, is a Clinical Psychologist in Social Services, specializing in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) and Trauma Counseling. Justin particularly loves working in college health because of the variety of issues that come up for our student clients and the opportunity to provide support to them during very crucial time in their lives. In Justin's #TangTip video he explains how all AOD counseling that Social Services provides is done from a non-judgmental "Harm Reduction" perspective. Final Flu Shot Clinics at Tang + Flu self-care

The final flu shot clinics of the year are coming up: this Thursday, Nov. 17 and Monday, Dec. 5, 12-5pm at Tang. Drop-in to either Flu Shot Clinic - no appointment necessary. 

Flu self-care + prevention 
Because viruses cause flus, antibiotic treatment (which work against bacteria) are ineffective. Over-the-counter medications may relieve some symptoms, but will not affect the course of the illness. Remember, your symptoms are a sign that your body's defenses are fighting the virus. Your body will ultimately heal itself, so be patient and be good to yourself! Q: I don't have a lot of money for food. How can I eat well on a tight budget?
A: "Unreliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food - aka food insecurity - is an unfortunate reality for many UC students...In the meantime, what will you eat for lunch?" Read Toby's tips for eating well on the cheap including tips for meal prep, grocery shopping and budgeting, and how to access financial assistance if you need it. 
Community support, spaces and resources following election 
Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) counselors have heard from students throughout this election cycle about the impact the rhetoric and conversations are having on their lives, their stress levels and their emotional wellness. Check out our support webpage for resources on community support, events and resources, including counseling at Tang. 
Upcoming closures and hours changes
UHS will be closed from Thursday, Nov. 24-Sunday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday and we'll be closing an hour early at 5pm on Wednesday, Nov. 23.  Need assistance while we're closed? Insurance for Graduating Students + Dependents
Are you graduating this Fall? Do your dependents need insurance? Enrollment in SHIP voluntary plans begin December 1 for students enrolled in SHIP who are graduating and need to extend insurance for one semester, or for students who want to add  dependent spouses and/or children for Spring 2017.
