Elementary Students Make Use of the New Track

On "E day" of the ABC Countdown, the
Second Graders enjoyed exercise day! Where is the best place to exercise here on the Bayless campus? Of course our new beautiful track and field!

The Second Graders had fun exercising by walking/running around the track. They also used their strong muscles to do jumping jack, push-ups, toe touches. We are so grateful to have such a great spot to go and let some of our energy out!

Since the track and field opened on April 5th, our students and community members have been using it virtually non-stop.

Acts of Character Shine at Bayless Elementary
Third Grade student Jason Dickhaus was honored at the Do The Right Thing  ceremony at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department on April 22nd. Jason was recognized for his quick action when he noticed his grandmother's neighbor was slumped over in his chair on his porch. Jason quickly notified his grandmother and emergency personnel were called to the home.  Jason's quick actions saved the neighbor's life.

Fifth Grade student Rianha Medley placed Second Overall at the national level for her Drug-Free poster.  Rianha won $75 for her Be a Roll Model and don't Do Drugs poster.

Jason Dickhaus and Rianha Medley are both examples of great character at Bayless Elementary.

On Saturday, April 26th, Bayless Elementary Fourth Graders hosted a car wash as part of a service-learning project. In the fall, all Fourth Grade students looked at local demographic maps as part of a social studies unit and noticed high levels of poverty in our area. They decided to raise money to donate to the Souper Bowl, an event held by BHS students to raise money for the Affton Food Pantry. After a rain out in October, the students were finally able to host the car wash. They raised $285 and will present the money to, as well as celebrate with, Melinda Brown and Patty Mudd's high school classes on Wednesday, May 7th. The high school classes will use the money to buy the bowls that will be decorated and sold at next year's Souper Bowl event

Bayless Middle School Competes in the Area-Wide Book Battle

For the first time ever on April 29, Bayless Middle School sent a team to compete in the area-wide Middle School Book Battle at Pattonville Heights Middle School.  Ryan Boyd, Alyssa Dorsel, Rene Kina, Chloe Moore, Jacee Tarkington, and Jennifer Vo matched wits with over 30 teams from around St. Louis.  Each team worked together to answer 10 regular rounds and 20 bonus rounds of questions that come from 20 young adult books.  Even though we didn't place, the Bayless team made a great showing for our first year and we plan to come back next year even better, stronger, and smarter!

Congratulations to Pasta House Painting Competition Winner Samantha Owens for her amazing artwork entry "The American Way." Samantha created the work of art in her high school painting class.

Miss Owens' painting along with Junior, Ina Papathanas' painting represented Bayless in the art competition  featured in the exhibition at the Saint Louis Science Center in April.  Samantha received an Honorable Mention award for her outstanding interpretation of Norman Rockwell's painting, "The American Way" created following World War II.  Miss Owens also received a monetary award of $100 from the Pasta House along with a $100 donation to the Bayless High School Visual Arts Department.
