Music Alive Ensemble’s Jazz Meets Classical 2024
A Tribute to Friends Alvin Batiste & Edward “Kidd” Jordan
Saturday, April 20 at 7 PM – UNO Performance Recital Hall

NEW ORLEANS – The Music Alive Ensemble invites you to an evening of "Jazz Meets Classical” featuring jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan and classical violinist Rachel Jordan in “A Tribute to Friends Alvin Batiste & Edward “Kidd” Jordan”. This vibrant, intimate program honoring the memory and legacy of their late father (Kidd) and uncle (Bat) features music written by both musical geniuses.
The evening takes place at the University of New Orleans Performance Recital Hall (main campus) on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 7:00 PM. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children.
A version of this riveting concert was performed to a sold-out audience at the legendary Eldorado Ballroom, in Houston, TX. The concert’s first set will consist of songs written entirely by Black composers, including “Syzygy,” by Courtney Bryan (who was one of their father’s students).
Another featured song will include “Music Came” sung by Stephanie. Regarding the Nov 2023 performance of that tune, FORWARD TIMES wrote, With a simmering rhythm section and Stephanie Jordan on vocal, “Music Came” honored the Jordans’ uncle Alvin Batiste, a renowned jazz clarinetist who founded the Jazz Institute at Southern University. “Music came,” Jordan sang, “way down deep in the depths of sorrow…Slavery didn’t make no difference. Music came.”
“Far from the shore of my native land/Never had family to hold my hand/Wherever, Wherever I might be, the universe provides for me…” The group will also pay tribute to their father with the punchy, propulsive “River Niger.” Inspired by their father and uncle’s trips to Africa.
Joining Rachel and Stephanie in the performance is Marlon Jordan (trumpet), Amy Thiaville (violin), Marjorie Garnier (viola), David Pulphus (bass), Rachel Hsieh (cello), Yui Asano (piano), Geovane Santos (guitar), Jonathan Bloom (percussion), and Terry Scott (drums).
Launched in 2001, the annual music series continued until Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It returned in 2008 and continued until its interruption by COVID-19 following the 2018 performance. Its return resumes a partnership with UNO, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation as the host sponsor. Other supporters include A1 Absolute Best Care, Impossibility Press, Inspiration House, and Sylvain Solutions,

This year’s performance is also dedicated to the memory of Kaaren Makas says Rachel. “Kaaren was my mentor and best friend. She encouraged me to create this ensemble, “Music Alive”, and was a major supporter of my crackpot ideas. She was always a presence in my young life. When I auditioned for the LPO she was so glad to see me, an African-American violinist in the section.
She was a part of many sessions at Cosimo Studio and Seasaint Studio. She was at the beginning of the formation of NOCCA and brought Young Audiences to life.
I wrote “Tango for Kae” as a tribute to her and our friendship”.
