Some say that JR changed his teachings over time. Is this true?

Absolutely not. Unfortunately, some people need to create this fictional narrative to justify mishearing or misconstruing what he actually taught.

I trained with JR in the early 1970s. I was in every class that he taught, except one week when I had chicken pox, until his death in 2003. Throughout my 30+ years with him, I observed him with over 8,000 patients. His teachings were consistent and faithful to the ancient lineage his masters taught him. Like all good teachers, he impeccably and sensitively fine-tuned how he transmitted the lineage without changing the content based on how he observed people’s ability to hear and absorb the material.

Someone was quoted as saying there is no longer a need for an oral tradition, thereby potentially undermining the lineage JR was entrusted to transmit. Why did JR hold steadfast that this system of medicine should also be respected and appreciated as the special oral tradition that it is?

With all due respect, this notion of modern replacing ancient tradition comes from a place of arrogance and disrespect for timeless wisdom.

JR respected ancient roots, which revered dialogue between Master and students. Although, of course, we include modern resources, they cannot replace the oral tradition. We at the Worsley Institute enjoy and appreciate the value of sharing this tradition with others and are grateful to JR for entrusting us with sole authority to transmit this precious wisdom.

Introductory Exchange Meeting in Shanghai

This past April, Judy Worsley and the Worsley Institute in collaboration with Lei Zhu (Freda) of Hai Bo Cheng (HBC) hosted a unique event in Shanghai, China. This endeavor marked the first time Professor JR Worsley’s teachings were introduced in modern China, and the Worsley Institute, as his authorized representative, eagerly anticipated this momentous occasion.

During this five-day Exchange Meeting, participants delved into the foundations of JR Worsley’s teachings, focusing on the crucial skill of diagnosing the Causative Factor (CF™) through Color, Sound, Odor, and Emotion. Participation was capped to ensure a quality experience, and 67 students from East Asia, Canada, and Australia attended. For the first time in the modern era, the ancient Chinese lineage that was transmitted to JR many decades ago was shared once again in its homeland. The team included Judy Worsley, Eric Hartmann, David Berkshire, and Stella Jiang, and their unified effort shined a light far brighter than the sum of their parts.

Students reported that the class was “ground-breaking” and expressed genuine gratitude for receiving Professor JR Worsley’s teachings authentically and clearly. They were an inspired and inspiring group of highly driven professionals, and the Worsley Institute is grateful to have shared this time with such dedicated, hard-working, humble, wise, and fun(!) people.

The Worsley Institute Team also enjoyed educational time through cultural experiences in Beijing and Suzhou. While in Beijing, they were hosted by Liu Lihong, author of Classical Chinese Medicine, for a wonderful gathering at his home and were touched by the respect Liu Lihong and his team showed for JR, Judy, and WI.

Following this acclaimed, brief five-day introduction, which provided only a glimpse into Worsley Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, WI and HBC are committed to providing complete training for practitioners in the near future.

Basking in Summer

Summer is a season of abundance and vitality, where nature reaches peak energy. Trees and plants are in full bloom, and the long, sunlit days encourage maturation. This time of year is characterized by warmth and brightness, reflecting the dynamic energy present in the natural world.

To thrive in summer, it is essential to align with nature’s rhythms. Enjoying seasonal fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, and engaging in outdoor activities can help harmonize the body’s energy with the vibrant environment. Additionally, balancing activity with rest ensures that the intensity of the season enhances well-being without leading to exhaustion.

Consider adding these cooling foods to your garden for enjoyment during the summer months:

1. Cucumbers: These are highly hydrating and can be eaten fresh or added to salads. They grow well in warm weather and require a sunny spot.

2. Watermelon: Another hydrating fruit, watermelon is a summer staple. It needs plenty of space to grow, as the vines can spread widely.

3. Mint: This herb has a cooling effect and can be used in drinks, salads, or as a garnish. Mint grows vigorously, so consider planting it in a container to prevent it from spreading too much.

4. Lettuce: Many varieties of lettuce grow quickly and can be harvested throughout the season. They prefer cooler, shaded areas and regular watering.

5. Basil: Besides its cooling properties, basil adds a fresh flavor to many dishes. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and can be grown in pots or garden beds.

6. Radishes: These crunchy, spicy roots are easy to grow and mature quickly. They prefer cooler parts of the garden and can be planted in succession for continuous harvests.

7. Celery: Celery is another hydrating vegetable that can be added to salads or eaten as a snack. It requires plenty of water and benefits from partial shade in the hottest part of the summer.

8. Tomatoes: While not traditionally considered a cooling food, tomatoes are hydrating and pair well with other cooling vegetables in salads. They need a sunny spot and consistent watering.

9. Zucchini: This versatile vegetable can be used in various dishes and is known for its high water content. Zucchini plants need ample space and sunlight.

Embracing the spirit of summer by connecting with nature and nurturing the body's needs can lead to a joyful and healthful season.
