It is with great sadness that I inform the congregation of the passing of

Joel Saban, beloved grandfather of Lindsay (Corey) Shulman and father of Rhonda (Evan) Goldenberg. Funeral and shiva information, along with a complete obituary, can be found below.

May the mourners be comforted among the mourners of ZIon and Jerusalem.

Rabbi Joshua Hammerman

--------------------

Joel Saban was born on January 25,1935 to the late Jack and Eva Saban. He passed away on April 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He lost his wife Barbara in 2002, after 43 wonderful years of marriage, but was lucky to share the next 22 years, until his passing, with Judeah Lerner, who has been his loving companion and most recently devoted caretaker.

Joel leaves behind many family and friends who loved him dearly: Judeah; his four daughters and their spouses: Cheryl & Michael, Rhonda & Evan, Susan & Russ and Meredith & Todd; his eight grandchildren and their partners: Lindsay & Corey, Lucas & Diana, Amanda & Samuel, Jacqueline & Seizan, Lance, Leeland, Brian, and Brooke; and his two great grandchildren Bret and Max. His daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of his life and they will miss him dearly. Through his relationship with Judeah, Joel was fortunate to have the wonderful addition to his family of Shari & Dan, Adam, Zachary, Matthew and Justin. He enjoyed family dinners in New York and New Jersey and being part of the grandkids’ lives.

Joel was born in Brooklyn and shared his early years of life with his sister Honey and brothers Bobby and Stevie. In 1959 he married the love of his life, Barbara Reiner, and a year later opened his own branch of the family business S&S Hosiery to support his young family. Joel and Barbara spent 43 years dedicated to each other and the family they made together. Joel worked long hours six days a week, taking pride in providing a beautiful home and full life for his wife and daughters. He was a pioneer in the world of pantyhose and provided costumes to many top Broadway shows, spoiling his family with his access to VIP tickets.

Joel had a way about him that would draw people to him. You could easily find him talking to customers, strangers on the train, friends and family, telling captivating stories that were likely to have been embellished, but he always swore they were true. This gift of storytelling made him the life of every party. He touched so many lives and each and every one was happier just for having known him.
