SUPPORTING AND AFFIRMING LGBTQIA2S+YYA
| |
This tip sheet was developed as a tool to support Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) programs, organizations, and their communities by outlining effective practices for supporting, affirming, and improving outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, asexual, and two spirit, as well as non-binary and gender expansive (LGBTQIA2S+) youth and young adults. Many of these effective practices are rooted in trauma-informed care and Positive Youth Development evidence-based frameworks. The detailed recommendations identify actionable steps organizations can take to provide safe, supportive, and affirming services; outline ways individuals can contribute to a healthy and inclusive work environment; and provide organizations and programs with critical questions to consider in their role of creating equitable systems and improved outcomes for LGBTQIA2S+ youth.
The practices outlined in this Tip Sheet are youth-informed. The Runaway and Homeless Youth Training and Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Center (RHYTTAC) has engaged youth and young adult consultants with lived expertise in housing insecurity and systems of care, including youth and young adults who identify as LGBTQIA2S+, in the design and development of this training and technical assistance (TTA) resource. RHYTTAC and these consultants are available to support RHY grant recipients to ensure that program services are safe and affirming for LGBTQIA2S+ youth and young adults.

KICK OFF PRIDE MONTH AT HIGHFIELD HALL & GARDENS WITH PFLAG CAPE COD AND SANDRA FAIRMAN-SILVA
|
Kick off Pride month at Highfield Hall & Gardens with PFLAG Cape Cod and Sandra Faiman-Silva, discussing her book Courage to Connect: Sexuality, Citizenship, and Community in Provincetown.
Sandra L. Faiman-Silva’s The Courage to Connect traces the transformation of the well-known Cape Cod community of Provincetown from its nineteenth century origins as a Portuguese fishing town to its present status as a welcoming, sexually diverse tourist enclave.
This book explores the history of the Portuguese ethnic community and the local economy, as well as the intersections between gay and straight culture in public education, local government, and the police. Capturing the pathos and joy of a community that has struggled to accommodate radical social changes, The Courage to Connect serves as a model for understanding how communities can model themselves to overcome their differences.
Dr. Faiman-Silva, is an author, activist, and Professor Emerita at Bridgewater State University. She has published articles on Indian gaming, youth and culture, and Provincetown and has received numerous awards. She lives in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where she is active in the town’s “No Place for Hate” campaign and in other peace and justice causes.

SAVE THE DATE! AGE AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY MASSACHUSETTS ACTION PLAN REFRESH, COMMUNITY LISTENING SESSIONS
|
In 2019, Massachusetts unveiled a plan to amplify, align, and coordinate local, regional, and statewide efforts to create a welcoming and more livable Commonwealth for residents of all ages. The Age-Friendly Massachusetts Action Plan is an articulation of the state’s vision and aspirations for what it looks like to grow older as a Commonwealth.
This year, Massachusetts is working to refresh the plan to guide the state’s age- and dementia-friendly actions for the next 5-10 years. We want to hear from you. The action plan serves as the state’s multi-year strategy to make the Commonwealth more age- and dementia-friendly. From the beginning, this action plan was designed to be a living document that would be continuously updated and renewed over time. Becoming more age- and dementia-friendly is an ongoing process that requires direction from residents and community partners.
In collaboration with Barnstable County, Regional Government of Cape Cod, Barnstable MA Council on Aging, and Massachusetts Councils on Aging, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs will co-host listening sessions to hear your ideas on how to make the Commonwealth more age- and dementia-friendly. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities are available upon request. If you need a specific accommodation, including language translation, please contact William Travascio at william.travascio@mass.gov.
