Sweet summertime! Is there a better time to read a book? The long days of summer are dwindling and I’m wondering if you had a chance to read some of the books on your TBR list?
Hello, friends of Barkley’s Bookshelf! While this summer is almost behind us, I, like most of you, remember childhood summers when trips to the library and summer reading challenges were a big part of our school break. How many books did you read, and what reading prizes did you earn were the questions asked at the end of the summer. It was an idyllic time. Little did we realize that reading and comprehension skills were being sharpened. The summer reading slide was prevented. And our readiness for the upcoming school year was secure.
As summer comes to an end and we look towards a new school year, we know that not every child has had the opportunity to read over the last two months. To that end, I’m excited to announce that our team is busy developing a new program to support literacy initiatives among the students we serve during the summer months too. Personal libraries are important and foundational to reading success, especially in the summer.
Yours in reading,
Brenda
