THE NATIONAL NORDIC MUSEUM

Hipp Hipp Hurra for the NATIONAL Nordic Museum on their new designation! Last week, legislation was signed into law that designates Ballard's Nordic Museum as one of 35,000 National museums in the country. Included as part of a comprehensive public lands package, the museum's new designation will bring attention and opportunities for future growth and support.
"We appreciate the work that Senator Cantwell and the entire Washington State delegation have done to make this national designation possible," said Eric Nelson, executive director and CEO of the Nordic Museum.
"This National Nordic Museum designation is a wonderful tribute to all of the time and energy and resources our community has put into this institution over the past 40 years," Nelson said. "We look forward to using this designation to increase economic and cultural ties with the Nordic countries, and attracting more tourism and economic activity and world-class exhibitions and programming to Seattle and Washington State in general."
The museum tells the story of the 12,000 years of Nordic history and culture and represents the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as the autonomous areas of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, the Åland Islands, and the Sápmi region of Northern Europe.
|
This new designation also highlights the cultural influences and values brought to Ballard by the Nordic immigrants who helped shape our neighborhood in the early part of the previous century. That lasting impact is showcased inside this world-class museum and is present in the neighborhood traditions we celebrate today. The museum offers activities, exhibits and events for all ages and is home to Freya, Ballard's newest Nordic caf
é.
One special exhibit that visitors and residents won't want to miss is
The Vikings Begin.
The exhibit will run until April 14th, 2019 so there is still a little time to check out the amazing Viking-era artifacts from Uppsala University in Sweden.

JAMES BEARD NOMINEES REPRESENTING BALLARD
|
It is described as the Oscars of the culinary/restaurant world and two of Ballard's finest have received the honor of being nominated for the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award.
Nominated as a semi-finalist in the
Best New Restaurant category is Chef Mitch Mayers'
Sawyer restaurant. The beautifully designed space and creative spins on a wide variety of American cuisine with far reaching influences has impressed the James Beard judges and locals alike. We are so happy Chef Mayers chose Ballard as the home for this great new addition to our neighborhood.
|
With a growing list of restaurants in the group,
Ethan Stowell Restaurants (ESR) is not slowing down and it has been noticed. Ethan Stowell has been recognized as a nominee of the James Beard Foundation Award in 2008 - 2011 for
Best Chef Northwest
category and
Best New Restaurant
for Staple & Fancy in 2011 as well. In 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Ethan Stowell Restaurants was a nominee in the
Outstanding Restaurateur
category.
This consistent recognition is a testament that Chef Stowell and his team are the best of Seattle. With four of their restaurants in Ballard, we are happy they chose to grow their delicious empire in our neighborhood.
The JBF award's finalists will be announced on March 27th and we wish both the Sawyer and ESR team the best of luck!

COMMENT PERIOD DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 2ND
|
If you have not had the opportunity to share your feedback, you have until April 2, 2019 to provide your input on the next phase of the Sound Transit West Seattle - Ballard link.
Federal Transit Administration kicked off the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) scoping period today for Sound Transit 3. Scoping is the start of the federal environmental review process and provides an opportunity to comment on the route and station alternatives, topics to study in the environmental impact statement, and the project purpose and need.
|
There are a number of different ways to learn more and share your input with them.
After attending numerous Sound Transit meetings and as members of the Stakeholder Advisory Board, we have studied and reviewed all available options. Through careful consideration, we are advocating for
a tunnel under Salmon Bay with an underground station in Ballard at 15th Avenue NW and NW Market Street.
This route minimizes impacts for both business owners and residents, provides much greater predictability than a draw bridge alternative, limits the impact upon maritime dependent business, and establishes a station that is closer to the center of Ballard's HUB Urban Village.
