October 2022 Newsletter

October 21st, 2022

Latest from the Chairman of the Board

Hello Back to the Bricks® Friends,

Here we are in the middle of October, and we are still having fun with our cars. Last Saturday, October 15, we finished our amazing 2022 season. We had a Car Show and Burnout Competition at Birch Run Speedway. We partnered with the speedway to have this event. The competition was intense, and I have never seen so much smoke! A couple of the cars burned the track up so much that the asphalt was smoking and giving off heat for over 15 minutes after they finished. One of the cars burned his tire right off! What a way to end the season.

I am so grateful for our sponsors and volunteers. We can do nothing without them! So, if you attended any Back To The Bricks® event, as a cruiser or a spectator, would you consider being a volunteer? I promise that you will have a good time and I promise not to ‘work’ you too hard. We are a ‘VOLUNTEER FRIENDLY’ organization. All of Genesee County community’s benefit from our events. Our economic impact on the county is HUGE! If you want to have an impact in our area, please consider joining us, you will be glad you did!

As we pause this fall, rest up a bit and reflect on our good times this year, we are already planning for next year, which will be our 19th year! WOW, 19 years! I am grateful to our founders for starting and working tirelessly to get it where we are today. Because we have such a firm foundation to build on, our leadership team thinks our best years are ahead of us! Look for the same quality events we have had but with a few new surprises along the way. If you have any suggestions for any our shows, please contact me so I can bring it to the committees involved. We are always open to discuss ways to improve and to try ideas that we have never considered.

I saw the first snowflakes of the year on Monday, so as the seasons change, enjoy the colors, the cider, and the donuts, and tuck those cars away for a (well deserved) long wither’s nap.

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions… I am here.

Thank you,

Al Jones

Gas Alley Car Show and Burnout Contest

HUGE Thank you to everyone that braved the "cooler than normal" evening in October to experience our first ever Fall Car Show and Burnout Contest held at Birch Run Speedway. SO MUCH FUN!

We are still collecting photos, but here's a quick video of what you might have missed! We can't wait until next year.

Main Event Chairman

Hey there classic car lovers,

It’s that time of the year. I just saw some snowflakes, which doesn’t bring me much joy. But it means it’s time to put those beauties away and start on new projects to occupy my time until Spring. There's still a few car events, don't forget to look for Trunk or Treats in your neck of the woods. The kids love our cars, and love candy even more!

I want to truly thank our Committee, Volunteers and Sponsors for a WONDERFUL year of events. Main Event had record breaking numbers, and the smiles on everyone’s faces made my job of being the Main Event Chairman even better. We work so hard all year long, planning, organizing, having meetings to decide the final plan. It’s truly nice to see it all come together, and even more fun to be a part of it.

On my list to do is have my furnace checked out in the garage, it’s about time to fire it up. I will say that working on a classic car project helps with that feeling of not being on the open road, attending car cruises or visiting friends at local Car Shows.

I have a 69 Camaro Z-28 X-33 that I’ve been working on for the past 4 years and I think it will be ready to go this next year with a little engine bay cleaning and engine install.

We’ve got a lot planned for you in 2023, I can’t wait! See ya at Chrome & Ice in February!

Stay warm everyone,

Kevin Murphy

Main Event’s Chairman

"The Fall Spectacular"

Fall has arrived and for a lot of us (myself included) it is a special time of the year. Moderate temperatures prevail and the autumn colors are spectacular. At this time of year, brings us the annual fall ACCA Hershey, Pennsylvania swap meet and car show. Having missed the last two years for the covid pandemic and family medical issues returning to ‘Hershey’ brought on feelings as thou I was going to the world’s largest swap meet for the very first time.

After attending the fall meet for forty-four consecutive years my youngest son and I were looking forward to the trip to Hershey. It was his first time going to Hershey and he was ready. We arrived in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania mid-afternoon after an uneventful eight-hour drive. Checked into our hotel and relaxed for an hour so and then it was off to dinner. Getting up early Tuesday morning we were greeted by a light steady rain but that did not stop us from going to the sway meet. Admittedly the inclement weather kept many of the vendors from setting up which resulted in many vacant spots. My son commented ‘I have never seen so many blue tarps in my life’ as most of the swap meet sites were covered. The poor weather did not dampen our spirits and we trudged on for the entire day knowing that we would have to cover the same ground the very next day.

Wednesday was fantastic. Clear skies and warm temperatures were the order for the day. My son who is working a Model A Ford roadster street rod manage to hit the jackpot. Many of the parts he purchased were reproduction like a ’32 gas tank, radiator shell and grill insert, recessed fire wall, front splash apron, taillights and more. The major purchase was a ‘pinched’ ’32 frame that is set up for the specific running gear he has for his project. His car is in running order but after ninety-nine years of abuse it need some serious upgrading and particular the frame. After a few minutes of discussion with the builder and between ourselves, he decided to purchase a new aftermarket frame that is built for his specific body and drive train. All the mounting brackets, brake lines, cross braces, etc. are in place and ready for the body to be mounted to the frame.

Looking at the bigger picture, the amount of time and expense of trying to restore the original frame we figured that it was more economically wise to purchase a newly made frame which is currently being manufactured in Ohio and will be ready for delivery in the next two weeks. Time is money as they say and the two of us feel that this is a much better way to go for his project.

My son is already talking about going back to Hershey next year but with a much shorter list of parts that he might be looking for. BTW! We walked approximately eighteen miles thru the swap meet and did not see the entire swap meet area. My flat feet are still paying the price but if God is willing, I’ll be there with my son next year! If you have never been to ‘Hershey’ I strongly recommend you get it on your bucket list. I promise, you’ll be amazed.

Keep on Rollin'
