“Let’s Talk 2023”

“The Lady of the Lady & The Voice, “ Eileen” Mimi” Gazaway will emcee

the final presentation and awards ceremony  of  Oakland’s BWOPA Dezie Woods Jones Policy Fellowship Program of on Wednesday August 16th with Special Remarks from the Honorable Dezie Woods Jones.

Oakland, CA - Join Black Women Organized for Political Action/Training Institute for Leadership Enrichment (BWOPA/TILE) for its final presentation for Cohort 7 of the Dezie Woods Jones Policy Fellowship Program, Wednesday, August 16th, via ZOOM, 6:00-8:30 p.m.

The public is invited to join the presentation and ceremony with Mistress of Ceremonies, Eileen “Mimi” Gazaway and special remarks by the Honorable Dezie Woods Jones celebrating eight fellows as they complete the final requirement of the four-month training program.

“Especially in the current environment that has emblazoned some to try to turn back the clock of social justice and equity, it is great to be able to make a substantive difference to ensure that we train women to move things forward, not backwards,” said BWOPA’s founding member and State President Honorable Dezie Woods Jones. The upcoming ’Let’s Talk’ presentation affirms BWOPA is in alignment with the sage community saying, “don’t just talk about it be about it.”

What is BWOPA/TILE Dezie Woods Jones Policy Program About? The organization annually trains fellows to focus on new policies in their communities that address BWOPA’s core issues of Criminal Justice Reform, Health, Economic Development and Education. Coming from communities from throughout the state of California with the expectation that they will impact their community for positive change, the fellows include: Josephine Appiah (Sacramento); Tracey Enskip (Alameda County); Danielle Foehr (San Joaquin County); Haley Hester (Alameda County); Cassandra James (Vallejo/Solano County); Latrece Martin (Contra Costa County); Desiree Miller (Fresno County); and Naomi Waters (Inland Empire).

Fellows were given access to corporate and political leaders as they experienced the following:

  • Learned how to craft policies relative to BWOPA’s core interest areas of Criminal Justice Reform, Health, Economic Development and Education;
  • Participated in educational and professional development training and seminars;
  • Met with high-level elected officials and influential leaders who work within the social and political arenas of BWOPA’s core issues;
  • Ascertained and developed political and public service values;
  • Gained invaluable leadership experience to be able to spearhead altruistic projects within California or beyond.

“As a professional in the criminal justice reform arena, I have been further empowered and equipped to take on challenges that call for change,” said Danielle Motley Lewis, DWJ Cohort 4 Fellow Alumni and is now the program’s co-engagement leader. Danielle has a consulting firm focusing on organizational and systems change.

Words from a current fellow Danielle Foehr, “I love the camaraderie of my cohort and the training received and community we have built, I feel so empowered knowing doors of opportunity have been and will be opened for me”.
