23rd Walk For Life

Dear Friend,
We are excited to announce the date for the annual Beth C. Wright Walk for Life. Join us Saturday, May 20, 2023, to take part in this.
Last year, the walk was very successful in raising money for the Center. These funds are used to help run the various programs the center offers to cancer patients and their loved ones.
This year we will have our traditional 1-mile, 2-mile, and 5-mile walking route options. We are once again holding a “5 miler” road race. This race will take place along the traditional route of the a walk and following the opening ceremony, with runners starting just before the walkers. We also plan on having our usual activities including a silent auction, craft fair, children’s activities and BBQ lunch.
While the Walk for Life is a crucial fundraiser for our organization, it is also a special day to remember, honor and recognize those that have been affected by cancer. This year we are encouraging local businesses to be sponsors for mile markers in honor of those that have been affected by cancer.
Enclosed you will find the 2023 Walk for Life registration form and pledge sheet. We are encouraging people to form teams of at least five people. Teams that raise $500 or more will be recognized on the back of the Walk for Life t-shirts. We are relying on you, our faithful donors, and supporters of our organization, to spread the word to your family and friends. Please mail donations to the Beth C. Wright Center (23 Commercial Park, P.O. Box 322, Ellsworth, ME 04605) by May 5th to ensure that your team’s name will be added to the t-shirt.
For the past 20 years, the Beth C. Wright Center has provided support, comfort, and healing to those affected by cancer in Washington and Hancock Counties. We are so grateful to those who have supported us and continue to support us in our endeavor to serve these individuals and their families. We look forward to seeing you once again at the 2023 Walk for Life on May 20.
Sincerely,
Haley Strout & Kayla Thompson

Two opportunities, two educational programs

Understanding Lymphedema, April 13, 1-2 pm,
- a Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center and Dempsey Center Collaborative program.
- An online presentation
- Register now to receive the Zoom link. Click below.
Lymphedema is a common side effect of many cancers and their treatments, causing pain and discomfort for many patients. Fortunately, with support and self-care tools, lymphedema can be managed and, in some cases, treated. Join us to discuss the basics of lymphedema: signs and symptoms, prevention, compression, exercise, and self-care strategies.
This workshop is led by Nicole Langstaff, PT,MS, CLT from ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation and is open to the public.
Join us on Zoom from home or access this program at the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center!
As with all Dempsey Center and Beth C. Wright services, these telecasted programs will be provided at no cost. This program is possible thanks to the support of Jane’s Trust, a charitable foundation located in Boston, MA, and the Hannaford Foundation.
For more information call 207-664-0339, email: info@bethwrightcancercenter.org, or go to www.bethwrightcancercenter.org.

Safe Harbor Cancer Support Group
The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center was founded on a mission to offer support to those living with a cancer diagnosis so that no one must go through their experience alone. In keeping with that mission, the Center is starting a new session of the Safe Harbor Cancer Support Group in April 2023. Newly diagnosed cancer patients and those currently undergoing treatment are welcome to join us in forming a new group. A meeting date and time will be determined by those who express interest in the group.
Safe Harbor Cancer Support Group is a confidential gathering for people living with any type of cancer diagnosis. Coping with the challenges of cancer can be an isolating and overwhelming experience. Sharing feelings and sources of strength with others who are walking the same road, helps one feel supported, uplifted, and fosters hope.
The group will be facilitated by Barbara Sinclair Ph.D., a retired clinical health psychologist who specialized in working with people impacted with chronic and life-threatening diseases.
This group is free and open to those living with a cancer diagnosis. For more information, please call the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center at 664-0339 or email: info@bethwrightcancercenter.org.

There are many opportunities to volunteer your time and energy a the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center. Currently we are looking for people to work at our front desk, answering phones, greeting visitors, assisting with mailings and other clerical tasks. If you are comfortable with using a computer, we could use your help with data entry and other projects. We would appreciate any amount of time that you can give on a weekly basis, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
We are also looking for new volunteer cooks to prepare meals for our Home Cooked Healing program. This is a great opportunity for people who love to cook, combine their culinary talents with their desire to volunteer. This is a rewarding way to help members of our community who are in need of healthy food while they are undergoing cancer treatment. The time commitment is flexible and cooks have the convenience of preparing meals at home in their own kitchen. The Beth Wright Center will make arrangements for the ServSafe training and certification that is required. Contacts us by April 17 to register for the next training session.
For more information about volunteering, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Amy Kurman at 664-0339 or email: akurman@bethwrightcancercenter.org
