Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents, Staff and Community:

Happy New Year! The Berryessa Union School District Board of Trustees and I are tremendously excited to begin 2019 with optimism, joy, and a renewed commitment to our mission of providing all students the skills to become lifelong learners and successful 21st century global citizens.

With the start of the new year, we are also taking a fresh approach to our communications. We have created a new, streamlined monthly newsletter that highlights the most important themes for the month. We encourage you to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter , where you can see our students, teachers and staff in action on a daily basis. There is so much to share and we want to hear from you on our social media platforms. Connect with us!
In this newsletter, we are pleased to announce our enrollment campaign efforts across the district. We request your special support in helping spread the word about our dual immersion programs in Mandarin and Spanish.

On behalf of the Berryessa Union School District, we wish all of you a very happy 2019! We look forward to an amazing year!

With great BUSD pride,

Dr. Roxane Fuentes
Superintendent
Enrollment Campaign Launch
It is that time of year again when we begin to reach out into our communities to enroll and welcome new students and families to our Berryessa community. As you can imagine, maintaining our enrollment numbers is very important to being able to ensure that we have the resources to continue supporting our current staffing levels and school sites. For this reason, we would like to request your support with our enrollment outreach efforts.

If you know of local families with children ages 4 and up, please invite them to learn about our school district and the many opportunities that we offer. Encourage them to visit our website to learn about the enrollment process and/or contact our District office.

Help us spread the word! As always, thank you for your kind support!

BUSD Dual Immersion Programs
Did you know that Berryessa Union School District is the only San Jose school district to offer two Dual Immersion programs?

We are very proud to have launched a Dual Immersion Mandarin Program at Cherrywood Elementary School in the 2018-2019 school year. We are very excited to announce that we will be launching a new Dual Immersion Spanish Program in the coming 2019-2020 school year at Toyon Elementary School.

For those who are wondering, immersion education is designed to provide students with fluency and literacy in two languages. In our programs, all students develop literacy in either Mandarin or Spanish first, with the gradual addition of English. Our immersion students receive the same curriculum as all students throughout the district, using California State Standards.

Please help us spread the word about these amazing programs. If you know of anyone wanting their child to become bilingual and biliterate, please share our contact information:

Developing a Growth Mindset
“If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it,” is one of Muhammad Ali’s most famous quotes. These simple words capture the essence of a growth mindset. Research shows that people’s beliefs have a tremendous impact on their behavior. This is why it is so important to teach our students that they can in fact learn anything that they set their minds to. What they know is not fixed.

As caring adults, there is much we can do to let our students know that they are capable, and that their abilities can be developed. Here are a few tips for teaching a growth mindset based on Carol Dweck’s leading research on growth mindset:

  • Be a good role model for growth mindset.
  • Praise the process, not the outcome.
  • Teach your kids about the brain.
  • Encourage your kids to take the hard route.
  • Stretch your kid’s capability.
