Dear BUSC families,
I wanted to provide a little information on the pain that the soccer clubs always feel this time each year with regards to lack of field space. Unfortunately, this time of year soccer is not recognized by the City of Pleasanton as having its “priority season”, so other “spring season” sports like lacrosse, softball and baseball are given a higher priority when deciding the allocation of field space. Additionally, after November 6, the number of daylight hours following school declines by an hour and increasingly gets smaller which only adds to the problem.
I met with the City of Pleasanton on Friday, February 10 to remind with them that although we have about 800 recreational players in the fall, we have over 500 children playing soccer year-round and that doesn’t include other Rec winter leagues, camps and clinics that we may also be holding. I believe Rage has similar numbers. For example, due to increased demand this year, we added (10) teams playing in a Winter Rec League so that is only causing additional strain on the limited field allocation. While I do believe that the passage of Measure I will eventually help increase the amount of field space in the future with the pending all-weather, artificial turf being installed at all 3 middle schools and potentially lights at Hart Middle School, it will probably be 2-3 years before we can start occupying that space, assuming the Pleasanton Unified School District allows it. We are having those discussions presently.
Although not ideal, we have contracted with a local community college with lights to move some trainings there and Val Vista is now open as of February 5. The rest of the grass fields including all city parks are scheduled to be open by March 1.
We do appreciate your patience during these highly impacted few weeks between January 15 and March 1 as we try our best to find field space that best suits your child’s needs. Although we try and allocate the earlier times for the younger kids and the later times for the older boys, there simply isn’t enough time in the day to give everyone convenient fields and times.
See you out on the pitch!
