Contributions or gifts (including membership dues) to CAHU are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. Pursuant to the Federal Reconciliation Act of 1993, association members may not deduct as ordinary and necessary business expenses, that portion of association dues dedicated to direct lobbying activities. Based upon the calculation required by law, 9% of the dues payment only should be treated as nondeductible by CAHU members. Check with your tax advisor for tax credit/deduction information.

COVERED CALIFORNIA UPDATE
In an effort to ensure that all agents get the most timely information possible, CAHU is forwarding recent notices issued by Covered California:
In an important announcement made over the weekend, all Covered California health plans have unanimously agreed to extend the first month's premium deadline for coverage beginning January 1, 2014. This applies to both the individual market and SHOP. All premium payments must now be made by January 15, 2014.
Individual Market: All payments, either by phone, online (if available) or by mail must be received by the health insurance plans by COB (5:00 p.m. PST) on Jan. 15 for coverage beginning Jan. 1st.
SHOP Market: Small businesses that have enrolled in coverage for Jan. 1st must pay Covered California's SHOP no later than COB (5:00 p.m. PST) on Jan 15. This means that all premium payments must arrive at the SHOP office on Jan 15; payments that are received after Jan. 15 will be processed for Feb. 1st coverage.
Covered California stresses that this is a one-time payment deadline extension, and that payment for coverage going forward is due at the beginning of each month. All households and small businesses with coverage due to take effect Jan. 1, and who supplied their email addresses to Covered California, will receive direct notification about this payment deadline extension.
Covered California Launches Consumer Payment Portal
Covered California™ launched a new Web page that gives consumers clear and simple access for making their first month's premium payment. Go to www.coveredca.com and click on the How To Pay button. Click here for more information.

California Department of Insurance Increases Agent Fees
Commissioner Jones notified agents and insurance companies that the California Department of Insurance will increase fees by 10 percent for agents, effective March 17, 2014.
An agent will see an increase of $14 for a biennial license renewal, (a $7 per year rise).
Starting in March, the two-year CDI licensure fee will be $154.
