Federal Reserve of Boston Externship
Guest column by Nikolas Gonzales, Digital Learning Specialist, BPSTechnology

During the April break, 4 educators, myself and three STEM teachers from the Boston Public Schools attended a 5 day IT externship at the Boston Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Boston. This was the result of months of planning and involved all of the different IT departments at the Federal Reserve Bank, BPS Office of External Affairs, and BPSTechnology. Its aim was to give us a real world look at IT in a government organization. The experience was amazing.

Throughout the week, the externs and I got to interact and learn from specialists and heads from each IT department at the Federal Reserve. We saw the Fed’s cash storage where we saw more money than we would ever make in ten of our lifetimes combined. On a more serious note, I was glad the STEM teachers were exposed to real IT and for them to see the endgame for their students who are interested in careers in the industry. The teachers got a real grasp of corporate IT and how it functions. They can use it to inform some of their lesson planning and be resources for the students who want to get into the IT industry. On my end, it was great to see how the IT departments of the Fed, given how expansive and cutting edge the organization is, share many similarities with ours. It has shown me that BPSTechnology, like the Fed, is also on the cutting edge of IT and makes me excited to work in such a dynamic environment.
