Chapter 5: The Lived Experience of the Black Man
(Linked here)
Facilitator: Nigel Gibson, PhD
The idea for this BPSI READS meeting is an introduction to Frantz Fanon (1925-1961). Many won't need an introduction and will be familiar with his work as a psychiatrist and revolutionary. The introductory text from Black Skin White Masks won't be a discussion of the psychopathology of the "being of the Black" nor the focus of Black Skin White Masks, the "Black who wants to be White," but rather the phenomenological chapter, "The Lived Experience of the Black." Written 70 years ago, first published in 1951 before its publication in Black Skin, White Masks, and very much grounded in its moment, this chapter has become a classic and remains important to thinking about anti-racist theory and practice today. We will use the reading to join together, to begin a discussion of Fanon in our contemporary world.
Nigel C. Gibson is the author of Fanonian Practices in South Africa (2011) and Fanon: The Postcolonial Imagination (2003), which won the Frantz Fanon Outstanding Book Award and co-author, with Roberto Beneduce, of Frantz Fanon, Psychiatry and Politics (2017). He is the editor of a number of books including three on Frantz Fanon, Rethinking Fanon (1999), Living Fanon (2011) and the forthcoming Reason and Revolt of the Wretched of the Earth (2021). He is Professor of Postcolonial Studies at Emerson College, Boston, and Honorary Professor, Rhodes University, South Africa. Nigel is a member of the BPSI Board of Trustees.
We are pleased that Nigel will lead our conversation on
