It seems in the context of our lives today that time and energy are two highly sought after commodities. While inventions and technology were initially thought to increase our time and energy, the initial thoughts have not appeared to come to fruition. Many of us can be heard saying such things as: "I do not have enough time to do everything;" "I am so exhausted that I am not able to enjoy myself and engage in the things I really wish to do;" "I would like to but I just do not have enough time or energy to do that now." Each of these statements indicate that our time and energy are limited resources which we wish we had more of but seem unable to gain.

I was once told that if you want to know what is important in a person's life, take notice of how they spend their time, energy, and financial resources. The expenditure of these items give a strong indication into what priorities an individual has set. As I have tried to heed this advice, I find it often to be very true.

This week we will confront the question which presents itself as we look at statements in passages from Joshua and in Matthew---"Who will you serve?" While we may be eager to answer, "The Lord," does our life give evidence of that answer? If we are observed, what priorities become evident in the choice we make in life. How do we expend our time and energy?

Blessings,

Pastor Mark

SMALL GROUPS UPDATE....

ALL ABOUT

The Balmoral Book Club has been bringing book-loving members and friends together for decades. From classics to recent bestsellers, fiction and nonfiction, short stories to sagas, the printed word is our focus, and camaraderie is our purpose – usually around refreshments!

Everyone is welcome!

Our selections come from participant suggestions. So far this year they have included: Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, The Library by Susan Orleans, All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriott, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Camillo, Have You Seen Luiz Velez by Catherine Ryan Hyde, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride, a variety of short stories by the late Alice Munro, and most recently Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.

Coming up in September is Abide with Me by Elizabeth Stroutt, and in October we will review a historical book about the Santa Fe Trail. At our November meeting everyone comes with a name of a book or books they would recommend, and it is from these recommendations that we come up with our subjects for the next year. In December we meet for a potluck lunch, usually in someone’s home, and gather around dessert to read aloud one or two of our favorite poems. This has become a much-loved tradition.

Our regular meeting time is the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at 1:30 p.m., (except for December, when we gather at 11:30 a.m.)

Please join us Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Beverly Hooker, 85 Country Place in Cordova, to discuss Abide with Me by Elizabeth Stroutt.

Abide with Me

by Elizabeth Strout

Oprah Magazine described Abide with Me as “Superb . . . a shimmering tale of loss, faith, and human fallibility" and Beverly says she enjoyed it very much.

We will meet at Beverly's House. As with today, anyone who wants to bring a snack to share is welcome to do so.
