Black History Month Celebration

Classroom Spotlight: Benjamin Singer

Message from the Principal

Dear Beachwood Middle School Families,

As we embark on another week of learning and growth, I’m thrilled to kick off National School Counseling Week with the national theme: “Every student deserves a school counselor.” This week, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of our dedicated counselors who provide essential support to our students academically, socially, and emotionally. Their commitment plays a vital role in shaping a positive and nurturing school environment for all of us at Beachwood Middle School. On this note, we hope to see many of you at next week’s Family information session about anxiety and teens. See the announcements below for more information.

In addition, February marks the beginning of Black History Month. Throughout the month, our school will feature a variety of activities to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the rich contributions and achievements of Black Americans. Let us continue to come together as a community to celebrate diversity and foster an environment of inclusivity and understanding.

Have a great week!

Dr. Tony Srithai

Principal

Invitation from the Counselors: What is Anxiety?

We are excited to host a family educational night for Tuesday, February 13th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Middle School Counseling Department will be talking about anxiety. Topics will include:

  • What is anxiety and does this mean my child needs a counselor?
  • How does someone get diagnosed with anxiety?
  • What are common treatments for anxiety?
  • Tips for helping a student manage anxiety.
  • What does anxiety look like at school and at home?
  • Options for emergency services in the area.

The session will conclude with a family question and answer portion.

We can't wait to see you then!

Honors Science Placement Test

Each year the Beachwood Middle School science department offers the opportunity for students to take a placement test for entrance into Honors Seventh-Grade Science and Eighth-Grade Honors Biology. This test is optional but available to ALL students. To help prepare for the placement test, students need to be enrolled into Study Island, our online self-paced lesson review platform. Students are NOT automatically enrolled in these extra topics. Please email your child’s science teacher in order to have your child enrolled. This year's placement test will take place at the end of May.

**Note: Students already enrolled in an Honors Science course do not need to take this placement test. It is intended for students wishing to enter the Honors Science program.

News & Highlights

Classroom Spotlight: Benjamin Singer

Students in the eighth-grade science classes recently finished a lab on density in which they used different liquids to make density columns. They used the density columns to make a correlation with how the densities of the materials in the Earth affected the formation of the layers of the Earth. Going forward, students will learn the connection between the layers of the Earth and geological events like earthquakes and volcanoes.

The eighth-grade biology classes finished learning about meiosis. They just completed their gummy worm meiosis labs in which they used gummy worms to simulate the meiotic process. In the simulation they showed events such as crossing-over, the separation of homologous pairs, and the separation of sister chromosomes during the production of reproductive cells as well as demonstrating how nondisjunction causes conditions such as Down syndrome. Coming up, we look forward to starting an exciting exploration of genetics.
