Dear Beachwood Middle School Families,

We are nearing the end of state testing, and I want to express how proud I am of the hard work that our students have displayed during the English language arts and science tests. This week, we are wrapping up the mathematics testing. I am confident our students will approach these with the same enthusiasm and excellence.

As we conclude end-of-year testing, I am excited to turn our attention to the talent and hard work of our students in their creative endeavors. Spring concert season begins next week. Please refer to the “Important Dates” section for more information. In addition, I hope to see you at the opening reception of the K-12 Art Show on Wednesday, May 1. I look forward to celebrating the creativity and dedication of our young artists and musicians together.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Dr. Tony Srithai

Classroom Spotlight: Mathematics with Michelle Karim

Students in Math 7 recently studied concepts of probability. They conducted a variety of activities that included rolling dice, flipping coins, pulling cubes from a bag, and picking a card from a standard deck of cards. The class discussed concepts of likelihood, theoretical and experimental probability, and how probability is used to make predictions.

Career fair

Career Fair for Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Students

We are excited to announce a new experience for seventh- and eighth-grade students: explorations into careers and interests. There are many exciting and interesting careers represented by our Beachwood families. We are seeking volunteers from local businesses who are willing to participate in mock interviews and job interviews. This entails having a booth at our seventh- and eighth-grade job fair and/or one-on-one interviews with eighth graders. Businesses can sign up for either or both options. The fair will be held on Thursday, May 16, during the students' school day. Please contact the school counselor, Mr. Terlonge kterlonge@beachwoodschools.org or call (216) 831-0355 with any questions or concerns.

Eighth-Grade Team Hosts Holocaust Survivor

Last week, eighth-grade students had the privilege of hearing from guest speaker Roni Berenson as they continued their Holocaust unit of study. Roni was born in Berlin in August of 1930 and was lucky to leave Germany in 1941 on one of the last boats of Jews allowed out of Europe and into the United States.

Roni has been an anti-war activist since the 1960's with her husband and family, demonstrating against the war in Vietnam, protesting against the build-up of nuclear weapons, among other things. In 1984, Roni was awarded the Albert Einstein Peace Prize by Physicians for Social Responsibility. In 2013, she received the bi-annual Humanism Award for activism in promoting and advancing humanist ethics and values.

Beachwood Schools Rescreens Holocaust Documentary for Yom HaShoah

Beachwood Schools invites the community to a special rescreening of the 2010 student-produced documentary From the Holocaust to Freedom: A Journey to Cleveland. Free and open to the public, the rescreening will be held Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the Beachwood High School auditorium. The documentary, conceived by former superintendent Dr. Richard Markwardt, recounts the stories of Cleveland-area Holocaust survivors. The rescreening will take place in observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins at sundown on Sunday, May 5. The district has extended invitations to the survivors, their families and friends, and all individuals involved in the documentary's production, emphasizing the importance of preserving these vital stories.
